dont bother. windscreens obrien or similar will put it in for about $80, supply a brand new seal, and if it leaks they will come back and fix it, if you try to do it yourself and it leaks you are up for another seal...or 2. its one thing it pays to have an expert do. use the time and effort you save to do something you can manage yourself ( not having a criticism of your ablities)

Definitely. I do 90% of everything myself, but i know the value of hiring a pro when its needed. After all, its their life, their income. Also pays to develop relationships with quality professionals. Ive got a great rep with the tyre shop round the corner. Cant argue with free fittings and balances :-) |

Yea I do and the answer is "DONT DO IT YOURSELF" I foolishly thought I could put the front and back windscreens in my sons HQ so I bought some Sikaflex (Is that how its spelt?) and put the back one in, average job to say the least can see bits of black goo even with the chrome trimming. The front one was a disaster looked like #$%^ and leaked like a sive. I removed the glass (Yea that was fun) and redid it. It dont leak now but still looks like #$%^. Get a pro...And use the heat seal..stay away from the black goo of death... Cheers "We are but a grain of sand on the beach of life" Edited by user Monday, 22 June 2009 11:08:53 AM(UTC)

Its not that hard if you are willing to read the HQ body manual & use the correct seal & procedure. I have done both the front & rear screens in my 72 Kingswood been in 5 years & not a leak in sight. Its alot easier than doing a EHs front screen, all you need is the correct bostic seals ( same as used on XF fords),they cost about $45 posted off ebay, a 24V power supply (2x 12V batteries) & patients. I would suggest to give it ago your self but its up to you. once youve read the manual you realise how simple it actually is & wonder why you pay $80 to $100 for it to be done. I must be getting too old or something, $80 to $100 for the seal and installation by someone who knows what hes doing. Why would you bother? Anytime I use Sikaflex I make sure I have a good supply of latex gloves, do not get it on your skin, it takes ages to scrub/wear off. Edited by user Monday, 22 June 2009 11:28:32 PM(UTC)

Gee wish I could get the same service in the country. The only people that come to my house have blue uniforms and are not invited..Ha Ha! "We are but a grain of sand on the beach of life" |

I did my own. I used a whole tube of sikaflex around the screen (about 1" thick, double layer of beading) and got a mate to help me put it on. We spent ages going around it making sure there were no gaps, slightly trying to move the glass around so it would squish into place. It took us about an hour to do.
It leaks like there are about 5 x 1cm gaps around the screen!!
It was worth learning the lesson and the screen is in pretty bad nick anyway but for the sake of chasing your tail, Ill be getting someone else to install another one soon.

They are easy to do yourself but like others id rather pay. However I will always pull the old one out myself and remove all goo. Then fix up any rust, or clean up surface rust, prime and paint properly. Then pay someone to fit a new one.

Id hazard a guess that its just a matter of supply. Fitting couldnt be any different could it? |

Hi, I took the correct way out and had the screens in my GTS 350 done by the professionals. As many will admit, it appears to be a relatively simple job following the manual providing you have everything listed. I decided against doing it and paid to get a good job. I dont think you can beat someone who does a particular craft for a living. With automotive glass, the last thing you want is a leak or worse a mark on your new paint just near the mouldings. Ralph Moore glass can supply the correct glass without that ugly black border treatment that does not look anything like original.

The black border is factory original, but only for the WB series.
I think the glass manufacturers simply superseded the HQ-HZ glass to the WB type just to save on inventory. Some people like the look of the border, as it hides some rough edges & dead insects. But as you say, it doesnt look good on an original HQ GTS.
Also this post has altered course slightly. When the tinted band was first mentioned, I believe they were referring to the dark tinted section (approx 6-inches wide) across the top of the screen which is now very commonplace. The black border is a totally different thing.
