Hi guys,

I have an HD thats been restored and have been driving it for a few years but I have itchy feet again and I'm thinking of heading down the V8 road. It's currently running a 179 three on the tree with bench seat and I would like to keep the bench - therefore keep the column shift. I'm wondering what the feasibility of a 307 with column shift powerglide is? Do I need to replace trans tunnel for this? I seem to recall the manual tunnel being smaller than an auto. I assume I would have to have rack and pinion but not sure how linkages would work with this kind of setup. It's early days yet so I'm laying my ideas down 1 step at a time. I haven't even got on to suspension, brakes, diff, chassis strengthening etc. So just need some knowledge, directions and options. Not much really haha.

Cheers,
Dan

The HD came with a Powergide, so the tunnel should be ok. It was the EK, EJ and EH that had the smaller manual tunnel. Column shift and bench would work. Check out your local HD-HR club if nearby, and you will most likley see a V8 car there you can chat to the owner and get a lot of ideas first hand, and look at them with your own eyes.

Then amass about $10,000 to buy the parts, if you are doing the work yourself, contact your local engineer (VASS in Victoria) and get started.

Many places around offer far superior product, information & customer service than CRS. As the conversion youre considering is basically the same as any early Holden V8 conversion, checkout forums of other early Holden clubs. Many enthusiasts have posted full project histories including images.
Pete smol mentions a figure of $10000 for components for the conversion. Personally, I reckon that figure is quite conservative. Do get onto a qualified engineer for a start with a complete outline of your project. Rather than ask the engineer how to do it, show him a complete proposal including all your desired modifications & how you will go about getting there. Best of luck.

Thanks for your help guys. Will hunt down a suitable engineer and get in touch with specific clubs. Half the fun is the search.

Cheers,
Dan
