When being stuck behind one in traffic you cannot see the road ahead of the average 4WD. This constitutes a hazard to other road users. You can park a car on the roadside within a certain distance of an intersection but if someone parks a 4WD close to an intersection they are still legally parked but causing danger to anyone trying to use that intersection due to the visibility blocking issue. This has directly increased the price of fuel and the price of everything that everyone buys that has to be transported using fuel. Dont get me wrong I would love to own a large 4WD IF I could afford to use it for its intended purpose and not as transport. I think that 4WDs are like guns and bullbars, they really have no place in the city. A good percentage of lifted 4WDs have no more ground clearance than a stocker as they leave the chassis at stock height and raise the body for that "tough" (Ive got a needle dick!!) look.
If at first you dont succeed then skydiving is not for you. |

Apparently most city dwellers who drive 4wds think they are safer than a car. I am sure that Ive read somewhere that more fatalities occur in or are caused by 4wds pro rata. Id be rich if I had a dollar for every dumb arse car driver that tried using this as a defence. Can you see any clearer down the road when stuck behind a Holden Captiva, Ford Territory, BMW X5, one of the multitude of people moving mini vans, panel vans, Econovans, Transit vans, Mercedes vans, mini buses, buses, trucks, Caravans or Motorhomes????? because even when in my large 4wd, I cant.
In reality, if these constitute such a hazard for you then you are obviously following too closely behind the vehicle in front of you.

Excuse me a minute while I pick myself up from the floor and wait for the pain in my sides to subside. You dont honestly believe 4wds are responsible for that do you? 4wds are no longer the gas guzzling monsters they once were, a 4.7L V8 Landcruiser is only marginally less fuel efficient than a 6.0L SS Commodore. A large percentage of 4wds are diesel or turbo diesel which are actually more fuel efficient than your average V6 family sedan, the 3.0L turbo diesel Nissan Patrol being a perfect example.
Back before 4wds became the Yuppies vehicle of choice, owning one was a lifestyle choice. They were slow and cumbersome with truck like handling and ride but they allowed you to get away from the rat race, they were not an ideal around town vehicle but you put up with it to have your weekends away enjoying the solitude of the Australian bush.
The explosion in popularity of 4wds has caused many of the areas I used to visit to be either closed, have access severely restricted or every man and his dog goes there. As this is still a free Country and not Communist run they have as much right as I do to go to these places and drive on our roads without being taxed off those roads because some now find them annoying.
It is the ill informed few who whinge, bitch and complain until stupid legislations like the original topic of this thread are passed.

some of the media movements to ban bullbars/4wd, etc i believe are being pushed by big car manufacturers??
maybe i am wwrrooooon,,, wwwwroongg, still cant say that word.!!
but i would suggest that the gov/road dept,s are way out of control,,
regulations/ unbelievable,, dont see the road toll coming down?? keeps going up?

Heres a new thought...on tppic, funnily enough.
We know the facts and figures point out that more people who modify suspension are out of the "danger zone" for hooning...so where are the governments facts directly linking cars with modified suspension to accidents/fatality?

Raising the body on a 4WD increases the angles of approach and departure, it allows for greater wheel travel in the upwards direction and allows fitment of taller tyres specifically suited to muddy conditions.

Lets put the arguement for and against 4WDs aside for a second and get back to the real point. This pathetic NSW Labor government introduced these new laws due to the stupidity of an AH called Harold Scruby of the Pedestrian Council. He is so anti-car its not funny.
If you want to send the Minister for Roads, Michael Daley, with your complaints, please send him some kind words to: [email protected] and while you are at it, if you ever see Harold Scruby on a pedestrian crossing, run him down. It would do the street machining movement a big favor.
