An M30 box is the 4L60-E electronic automatic from VR onwards.

He might mean M20 (Aussie 4-speed) or M40 (Tri-Matic).

Sounds like you have one of those old-school single-barrel stromberg carbs on there. I wouldnt mind betting that, either youre running way too rich, have a major blockage in there somewhere, or more likely have a 202 carby on there or the wrong type of jets.

Single-barrel strombergs are a beaut carb, if theyre working properly, but can be a pain if you dont have a good one.

I had a mate that got ripped off buying a VC that looked nice with its fake black tinted windows, and its group a grille, but with the front-end damage and the 161 red motor in there, I wasnt the least bit impressed for what he paid for it. The thing he had, he could barely drive home, as it had a late model 202 stromberg off a vb commodore. It kept on flat spotting and chugging as we were driving along the highway. I needed that carby on his vc for a 202 project, and I had just what he needed. I installed the tall-bodied 161 carb, and it ran like the shower of S**t!. It was a real mean machine. We Got into lots of trouble doing burnouts in it!, but for a 161 red motor, it was impressive. This was in an auto trimatic too.

If youre gonna run a 350 holley, you will probably need to run a 5.5 powervalve with 58 mains jets.

Personally, it would be easier to track-down a genuine 173 carb "shouldnt be too hard", or look in an old holden workshop manual and check your jet sizes. I reckon that a reconditioning kit and a good clean out might also be in order. I much prefer the stromberg single-barrel carbs over most because they are simple to overhaul, easy to powertune, simple in design, and also a speedway mate of mine swears by them. Loves his Hq racing.

yep youre dead right, its a single barrel stromberg and probably off a 202. i had to get a new inlet manifold and carby to meet emission standards when i bought the car and i got someone else to source it. i ended up paying way too much for it. ill try get a 173 carby asap.
