i have just had a 308 installed into a hg holden, rebuilt bottom and top end, now its blowing bubbles out the radiator (if the caps off) or creating massive pressure if the caps left on, i am sure the heads are torqued right and dont know where to start, it gets so much pressure it leaks out under the thermo housing and coolant overflow, any ideas?

Sounds like a crack or head gasket blown or not right.

no oil in water or water in oil, idles brilliantly and is quieter than the 202 that preceded it.

Im no mechanic but it sure sounds like your combustion chamber is now linked to your cooling system. Obvious location is the head gasket region if not maybe worst a split bore. Maybe a compression check will give you the location.

a split bore is very easy to notice when it was machined Edited by user Monday, 20 July 2009 11:46:14 PM(UTC)

Yep that would be true unless it was super fine but none the less hes got bubbles in his water and I bet hes not running carbonated water in his cooling system. The bubbles imply that compression is getting into the cooling system and there is only so many choices. He has no oil in the water and via versa. Guess that means water jacket or gallery. Compression check should have the result or one could remove all plugs then pressurize the cooling system and then spin it over and see which plug hole shoots water out, but I suspect that at least one head is about to come off or the engine is back out. this may be a stupid question but should the bubbles be there all the time or only when its hot and at high revs?

you will get some bubbles from the water pump, a natural reaction. as the other have said compresion test, take out plugs pressure test cooling system and crank over. also from cold fit a cooling system pressure tester, do not pump up,run engine and see how much pressure it makes on it,s own, also find a radiator crack test a chemical reaction to exhuast gas coming in cooling system, changes color if exhaust gas is in coolant (follow intructions to a t to get correct reading. is it a new thermostat? pete.

hey mate, If you are really worried get a preasure test as this will tell 100% if everything is seal up ok. If there is no water in the engine oil, I suspect it do with your heating system. "The Heater Must be Turned On: Turning the Heater to the on position will make sure that no air pocket is left. Any air that is left in the Heater Core will make its way into the head and cause overheating at an embarrassing time. " http://holdenpaedia.oldh...com/Filling_the_RadiatorThis may help. Cheers

cool, will do, but i thought turning the heater on only turns the electric fan on doesnt it?, doesnt the coolant run through the core at all times and the fan is whats used to puch the air through it to heat it?
Whats confused me most is there are only bubles at around 3500 - 4000rpm? not when its at idle cold or warm.
