hey all..
need some help with the floor shift column in my HJ.
when i yank on the steering wheel, the wheel and whole steering column shaft moves back around 1". its the whole bearing unit from the coffee pot' thing (ignition barrel's metal casing part) that drops out, letting the column move.
the steering is unnafected, and i can easily lift it up and push it back in.. but it seems unsafe. so what is wrong here, and how do i fix it?
is there something thats supposed to hold either the bearing unit or column in place? i have a feeling ive always had the washers/spring order wrong in the column between that bearing and the steering wheel... which has been this order:
-the bearing
-washer
-spring
-washer
-steering-wheel
-washer
-Solid nut
-thin nut
from memory, there was a circlip between 'washer' and 'steeringwheel' that held the spring in place.. putting tension on the bearing. but looking at it i cant see how it would go on.
any help would be greatly appreciated!

where the bearing sits in the coffee pot there is a casting
around the bearing to stop it from moving if it is broken the
shaft will move out, you will need a new coffee pot
it is very thin and easy broken

do the whole column its better and easier ,in my opinion,you get to replace alot of parts at once.if its doin that the rest could be near failure too.

Hi All,
I have a similiar problem with my Hj Steering Column (Floor Shift) and was hoping to find out if there is anyone in the melbourne area that repairs or offer change over units?

well Greg no disrespect but he didnt ask for a mechanic?..advice is free and I dont know any mechanics that are any better than me or some of the others on here(you included) when it comes to stuff like this.The BEST solution by far is to replace the column its dead easy and you know it.6 bolts and a couple of plugs...doesnt get easier.and thats my opinion!..P.S if you have to be a "mechanic"to be believed ,we're all f@#ked! also,yeah Ross,even thou your not a "mechanic",just fix it that way and hope it doesnt fall apart whilst your driving. no disrespect taken...actually jim,i was being very sarcastic because that is the standard answer that a mechanic gives... and why do you need to replace the whole column for if there is a very high possibility that the other column has the same problem...or has more problems..and yes jim advice is free but sometimes you pay for it after.. going to church makes you no more a christian than standing in a garage makes you a car... www.classicozwreck.com.au |

Anyway I still think its easier to replace the column and you can and should check
any parts you buy.I think of it the same as transmisions,easier to replace
with one you KNOW works than stip it down and spend a week on it,again
just my thoughts.

my point to what you have said jim is...over 90 per cent of columns i see are stuffed in one way or another and i reckon i probably see more than joe average doin what i do...its the top pot and its not rocket science to replace but most people go ...oooh no just replace the column with a good one...checking parts is ok if you know what you are looking at..most dont.your opinion is fine with me jim but i must say that i disagree with your statement of replacing it with another column..learn how to fix it... going to church makes you no more a christian than standing in a garage makes you a car... www.classicozwreck.com.au |

My point is if you dont know what your looking at,dont tinker inside your steering column,thats common sense I would say,and if you dont know get someone who does to show you.,teapot or column,same thing? Have you read RdS' restoration thread? I have. Twice. Start to finish. I'm pretty sure he can handle a simple top pot replacement.
