Everyone keeps telling me, including the performance shop guru thati have to run my cam in, but no one can tell me why. I refuse to run the car at a standstill for 20 minutes at 1500rpm cos i have extractors and they will not only glow red hot after a while but will also melt shit that is in close proximity to them...iv seen it happen even with 6 fans pointing at them. Would it be ok to run the car for 20 mins or less driving slowly around the block just to keep the extractors cool?? Any help appreciated Cheers

I think the main purpose for running in the cam, is to work harden the cam lobes, as for the extrators goin red hot sounds like the tune was on a bit of the lean side, if the tune is good there shouldnt be any problems at all.

I remember we ran my 202 in at around 3000 rpm... so double check your 1500. Might be different for different engines, I don't know.
If you're worried about cooling, perhaps putting a few portable 240v fans around the bonnet pointing in might help
