Gday all,
I have a really bad rattle in the front of the engine on my VR V6, which is louder at idle, but is there all the time. To me it sounds like it is coming from the timing chain area, but when I take the belt off and start the engine the noise is gone, so this leads me to think maybe the harmonic balancer is shot, but it is only about 18 months old and looks fine, the rubber is not perished or cracked or anything. I know it is not the water pump because that is only 2 months old, and still spins by hand nice and smooth. Can anyone tell me how to check the harmonic balancer for sure without taking it off or dismantling half the engine?

Have a good look at the front of it. Use a mirror and light if you have to. Maybe use a lever with care and try to move it. Re-check the bolt tension.
The spring loaded tensioners can rattle too.

I would put money on the balancer. Some just dont last.

Yep, your a winner thats what it was, dasmn thing only lasted 18 months, lets hope the new one lasts a bit longer.
