I own a HX ute also with similar setup -6 cyl extractors and standard carb. What i have found is that my engine pings like crazy if the points are even the slightest bit open. I fixed my problem by purchasing a new set of points and closing the gap so muc

Hi Ash Craig.
All you are doing by closing up the points, is retarding the ignition. If the points are too narrow the spark will be weakened. You can achieve the same (but better) by correctly setting the points (use a cheap dwell meter if possible) & |

I just went and checked my head and its a low comp. head, great! just what I need!, can it be changed by simply putting a hi comp head on it or is there more to it than that? could that be why its pinging? I`m running it on PULP with a lead replacement ad

To Doctor Terry, i realise what is happening by closing the gaps in the points. I done the points with a dwell meter and as expected the dwell angle was far too low - about 20 degrees. This however is the only way that i can prevent the car from pinging-

Hi ToddBrokenHill.
A low dwell reading (20 degrees) is a very wide points setting. They work in reverse. The wider the points, the lower the dwell. 40 degrees is narrow & 20 degrees is very wide.
Ideal setting is 32 degrees, anywhere between 30 & 35 |

Daniel, Going completely from memory 12-16 thou. The easy way to set it is to connect the dwell gauge & have someone crank the engine whilst you adjust the dwell.
