Hi Guys,

My brother has picked up for himself a VK V8 Commodore supposedly an ex highway patrol car. I have my doubts as it is a manual and not an auto?

I am hoping one of our learned brethren can add some light on the following details.

Model - VK8VK19
Body Number - 130676-A
Trim - 1886-64X
Paint - 1D 008-D
Build Date - July 1984

Engine L31 - Gearbox M-21 - Axle GU4

Tag on radiator support panel - 8K19TD L130676K

Compliance Plate - 07-84AVK 009687A

The engine number has a VT prefix.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,
Allan

Plenty of highway patrol VKs were manuals. Some had HDT spec engines. Engine is a 308, I cant help with the rest. Mick (Commodorenut) will know much more.

Al, The highway patrol VKs did not have power steering or a rear stabiliser bar. The speedo looks different to the standard one as well, finer graduations. The loom for the roof gear will be found in the drivers side B pillar. I used to own one and it was manual. Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Pete.

Theres lots of ways to pick a cop car over a regular commodore, but very little to distinguish a HWP car from a GD.

One telling factor with this car, is the Absynth Yellow paint - in the VK range, you could only get that on police cars.

Look for things like the chrome calais dome lamp, rear door armrests on the front doors (with ashtrays), the round inlay in the otherwise square speedo, a hi-rise console with armrest (and the factory console mounting bracket welded into place on the top of the trans tunnel under the rear of the console).

Unfortunately these cars are pushing 25 years old now, and a lot of them have had aftermarket suspension work done. The lack of a rear swaybar is one telling factory, but as all the holes & bits are there, its simple to fit one. Power steering was mandatory on all regular V8 commodores sold to the public, and some, not all, only some HWP cars had P/Steer as a delete option.

Generally the manual (and only the manual) VK BT1s had the SS spec V8 fitted - B-cast heads, manifold with a casting number that ends in 955, double-row timing chain & other goodies.

Cheers,

Mick

Many thanks Mick!

We can tick off the yellow paint, the console, the chrome light, the arm rests, and the ash trays so it may be what it was sold as! We will have a closer look at the motor and see if it has B cast heads or not and the manifold casting number.

Something else you might be able to throw some light on for us Mick are two holes in the rear floor behind each of the front seats close to the side of the car? I was thinking it might have had a roll cage at some time but what about a "shield" like the current crop of Police cars have so you cannot have a swing at them from the back? Are these something new? Or where they used in the VK days?

Cheers,
Allan
