Hi guys, havent been on this forum for a while. I am having some work done to my Holden based HG Ute (South African 1972 Chevrolet ElCamino). The original removable loadbed has seen better days and needs to be replaced. It appears that the existing loadbed was made of what looks like MDF (medium density fibreboard). Can anyone confirm if this is the correct material for the loadbed or suggest an improvement. Thanks. Garry (rare1s_2u at icon.co.za)

Chev elcamino sounds heaps better than HG ute... the original material was MDF with steel runners on top.
these go back to FE at least, maybe further?
the steel runner width / style changed 3 times from FE to HG. not sure when though... eg. FE ute runners are different to EH ute runners etc.

They are in fact 6 ply with a top sheet of masonite and painted Mundi Brown . MDF probably was not een around then ! (i may be wrong ) I am just doing mine in my Van at the moment . The paint that goes on the side walls is call "Granite" Hope this helps . cheers James www.monaromuscleparts.com

i think it was more like a chip board material. MDF was not common at that time and the original stuff wasnt to good anyways.i would look towards more of a plain plywood type board about 16mm and seal it with some sort of clear. And put it back the way it was with the crappy metal strips underneath so you can lift it up.

Thanks guys, the info is much appreciated
Plywood sounds like the best solution. I have checked with a local wood specialist supplier and can get 15mm marine plywood (quite expensive at AUD120). Ill have the steel runners zink passivated (and painted) and use stainless steel screws to secure it all down with sealer around the edges. The plywood will be painted both sides with UV stable material, have not decided whether to leave it natural wood colour or paint it factory brown. After that Ill try to keep it out of the rain...........Garry

Garry, also keep the "marine" ply out of the sun and in a flat cool area after coating, I didnt and wasted $150. AL.
