Hello I have four rims that i believe are HTG monaro,although one is dated 11/75 they all came off my HK.Can someone verify if this is correct and help with the last rim numbers as i will proberbly sell them. The numbers and dates are 6jjx14 8/70 Holden 22/1a 6jjx14 11/70 Holden 22/1a 6jjx14 9/71 Holden 22/1a 42 Holden 11/75 bev 14 (Not sure hard to read) Thanks Mark In Perth Edited by user Saturday, 31 October 2009 9:49:10 PM(UTC)

80569k its a Typhoon,the pic was taken by my grandfather in 1943 as he worked for napier sabre the company who built the master piece of a engine/Rated at 3000hp 24 cylinder "H" layout Liquid-Cooled Sleeve Valve Twin Crankshaft with a 2-speed Supercharger.

They just look like stock HTG rims but 6" wide, no slots like the HK rim

Those are normal HT/G 6" rims, as fitted to all HT/G that were either ordered with them or standard because of the luxury level eg V8 GTS. They suit all HT/G except 1837 manual, except the very early HT 1837 manual which didnt have the slotted rims.

Sorry for the thread drift fellow gearheads, but this makes interesting reading and one can only imagine the pressure these guys were under to produce the engine. Hats off to your granddad Mark.
The Napier Sabre is, without doubt one of the finest piston engines ever built - arguably the best.
With 24 smallish cylinders running at high rpm (3700rpm normal max, 4200rpm war emergency) it made very good power for its size, starting development at about 1hp/cubic inch, finishing with 1.6hp/ci.
Post war bench tests had one engine running at over 4000hp. All from 2238ci (36ltrs) displacement.
The use of the H layout, with twin geared cranks, and sleeve valves meant the Sabre was quite a compact engine.
The complexity of the Sabre both worked for and against it. When all was running well it was a fine machine. Incorrectly maintained or abused and it was a nightmare. The complexity of the engine caused failures due to design and manufacturing faults and also due to incorrect tuning.
When Napier had finally sorted out the Sabre it was getting late in the war. The only operational aircraft of World War 2 to use the Sabre were the Hawker Typhoon and Tempest.

Dicey stuff when you consider an engine failure meant a parachute ride or death for the pilot, forget about a dead stick landing with 2540 pounds of deadweight on your nose.

HK81837 Thanks for the reply,I will put them on a nice trailer. 80569k Thanks for the comment my grandfather was a engineer for napier sabre.All up he worked for them from 1920-1970 and was a major figure there,With out people like him technology would be in the dark ages.Although it takes wars to get most of these invented. Id sell them to someone who needs original 6" rims, and buy some brand new ones from ROH for peanuts.
