Is it possible to clutch start an automatic? I read somewhere the realy early powerglides you could, because the pump is in the rear housing .

ive never done it but ive heard its possible on old autos, appently you have to be movin really fast then slip into gear
dunno how good itd be for the box though

The auto must also have a second pump, on the rear shaft, so you have oil pressure. (This why tow truck drivers do not drag autos on their drive wheels)
As you said, only older autos had this and not all of them. You also needed to get it to 30mph before slipping it into gear.

only unit I know that can is the morris/BMC autos, fitted to the morriss & some rovers/austins, if you drag the car in reverse at 30Mph you can jump start it, its in the morris 1100 shop manual on how to do it correctly...

Gee i never thought about the tow truck and autos you wouldnt want to get a toe hooked up wrong way wround could do damage maybe.Man 30 mph in reverse in a morris thats a bit of a mission , and fast too !I asked the question cause i am curious and have never tried to clutch one myself but the aprentice at work recons he has done it to an old mazda or dato cant recall which one. thanks keeo

We used to do it on the Falcon 6 cyl auto baggage tugs at Sydney airport many moons ago. Cant remember which tranny they had, probably whatever Ford tranny was the go at the time, late 60s & 70s era.
