Have a 98 VT Calais driving home today and the powersteering went from light (one handed ) to heavy (twohanded) driving in about 2 seconds. any ideas? thanks

Fix it..!..Na really start by checking fluid and for leaks and the belt ,,go from there.

had the same problem, the pump bypass valve is jamed open, tey another pump.
I did see on one site that the Calais had a different pump (speed sensitive power ster on Calais not on others) but just put on second hand on mine and works fine.

cars with speed sensitive steering have a valve in the rack with a plastic part which can break and float through the power steer sysytem, it can cause heavy steering as it jams the releif valve open and light steering when it partly blocks the releif valve, being a calais will have the speed sensitive steering. worth a look. pete.
