went for a drive today and the engine started surging then died. so i pulled over and sure enough there was no fuel in the glass filter before the fuel pump even though the gauge said half. so i filled it up with 14 litres and got it going again, drove thirty k to the nearest petrol station and filled it to full, it took 25 litres? WTF? that means the tank was on around a third when it run out of fuel, how does that happen?

Replace fuel pump and replace filter as Dave says, try again. If your fuel pump has a slow leak ,as in air it will gradually lessen the fuel within itself, same with a blocked or airing fuel filter. Also check ALL lines from tank to carby, failing all this check carby(but I bet not)

Sounds like somethings blocked, but not 100%, so some fuel gets through. Do the obvious like new filter and clean out the easily accessible lines.

Fuel tank pick up or line, blockage/split.? Generally fuel pumps suck the fuel up ,some others (holley electric)push fuel.Hence if your line and pickup is good
the fuel pump not sucking properly. If you have a filter before the pump take it out for a trial only.I try to run Holley electrics because they
save your battery and starter you just turn ignition on and wait(no engine movement)etc, bloody good value and they push fuel thru but I think some suck so find out ,they have centrifugal metal impellers kind of like a small turbo impeller.just opinions...cheers
