hi guys I am changing an auto in a vr and am hearing
that a 4hdd can go to a 5hdd but not the other way and that if you do it you have to change the rear extention housing to get around the wiring issuses.
the reason I am asking its easyer to get a 4hdd than a 5hdd and the one I pulled out was a 5hdd is there any truth to this or just a wives tail thanx in advance

As a rule of thumb: The 4= 1994, and the 5= 1995.

There are far more 5HDD boxes from VSs than VRs, as VR only made it to March 95.

You will need an early 95 box.

The later (from April) 1995 VS box is incompatible with the 1994 VR box - they operate differently (electrically) with the line pressure.

Mick

Yes, you can fit a 4DD in place of a 5DD box as long as you also swap the mem-cal which matches the transmission.

If you try it the other way around (5DD trans into a 4DD car) you will also need to run an extra wire from the ECU to the transmission.

The mem-cal is inside the engine ECU. Its just a plug-in chip.
