Could anyone tell me the difference between 6cyl and 8 cyl powerglides as ive been offered one and the description is, cast one piece bellhousing that goes to a point at the top thats all the info i have.Not much help i know, but im yet to see it and need to know the diffeences. Cheers

Ok , a Chev V8 powerglide is a 1 piece case, where as the 6 cylinder has a bolted on Bell-housing , the internals are much the same , But some people say otherwise . so to make this simple a 6 cylinder PG wont bolt up to a chev V8 unless you change the input shafts and an after market V8 Bell-housing and converter . Im sure some other ppl on here can comment more? Hope I helped in anyway Cheers ITCH

Gday itch, so what i could be getting is a v8 glide going by the one piece bellhousing, if so wat are they worth as i would like to offer him something, even though he is giving it to me. Cheers

I sold a V8 Glide on fleabay for $650 ,plus the buyer had to get it transported from here (QLD) to VIC ,The thing about the V8 glides is they are getting hard to find as they are super strong and are widely used in drag cars. Also were only used in the HK-G V8s maybe some early Qs then the Turbo 350-400 and Trimatics replaced them. If he is giving it to you, ya got yaself 1 big Bargain!!! Cheers ITCH

I thought there were more than 2 types?Anyway a chev V8 glide goes for a fair bit and 6cyl ones I think do have different internals,but someone here will expand on my thoughts (hopefully!)..cheers.ps just had another thought ,there has to be .......I FOUND THIS...................at 9" extention housing makes it a 25" long Powerglide. Aluminum Powerglides came out in 1962 in the Chevy II/Nova AND in full size cars, IF they had the 327 motor; if they had say a 283 motor, then it was a cast iron Powerglide, the 235 six cylinder full size cars also had the cast iron Powerglide. ALL 63 on Powerglides were aluminum. And, ONLY two lenths to the aluminum Powerglides, 25" used in 62-64 full size cars, and 28" used in 62 on Chevy II/Nova, trucks, and 65 on full size cars. So, your Powerglide is for a 63-64 full size car. Since it is a 1.82 first gear model (low performance unit) it didnt come from 62, as 62 would be cast iron UNLESS it was behind a 327, then it would be aluminum and it would be a 1.76 first gear unit. That means your Powerglide HAD to be a 63 or a 64, and since its a 1.82 first gear, then that means 230 six cylinder or 283 V-8. And since it has a bolt on shifter extention housing it came in a car with bucket seats and floor shifter. I used to have a manual that had ALL the I.D. numbers for Powerglide, theyre located on the passenger side of the transmission just above where the did stick tube enters the transmission. You could look it up with those numbers if you can find the corresponding manual. Now, someone, somewhere, at sometime, could have swapped out extention housings for one with a shifter mounting. Ive done lots of Powerglides, from air cooled Chevy II/Nova transmissions, to taxi/police model Powerglides, to a 25" 1.76 first gear unit I have that originally came in a 63 409 powered car; found that out from those numbers I mentioned. Your Powerglide will also have a rear pump and a 4 pack high gear clutch, IF stock. WHO EVER WROTE THIS KNEW THEM.. Jim in Adelaide Edited by user Wednesday, 25 November 2009 5:32:59 AM(UTC)
