Started up the new motor yesterday & when running in the cam it overheated. only running a thermo fan so going to run a clutch fan & thermo & try a hi flow thermostat.
big problem was that the extractors were so hot they melted plug leads, wiring etc. i had overheating problems with the old 307 & wonder if maybe the extractors are the main problem ?
other than that the motor seemed fine.
any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Put a accurate temp gauge into the water system somehow and get a reading,unlikely to be extractors as they dont generate heat they just transfer it.Remember whilst running in the cam there is no airflow ,but I dont think your thermo fan is going to make the grade on its own. You also must run all your wires as far away from the exhaust as possible(I know that you know this but had to mention it anyway for other readers).....cheers Jim in Adelaide Edited by user Sunday, 29 November 2009 10:28:47 PM(UTC)

i dont know much about runing in cams but i do know that lack of air flow will overheat a engine real quick, maybe set-up a electric fan pointing into the grill? and another pointing into the engine bay? it may make a small difference

thanks did consider the lack of airflow. unfortunately the hk headers are such that it`s almost impossible to get leads away from them but will see how i go with over rocker cover type. i didn`t screw this motor together & am worried cam timming could be out. should of said, it`s a 350 jayson Edited by user Monday, 30 November 2009 4:12:55 AM(UTC)

maybe try wrapping the headers in some of that heat proof tape, ive never used it but i have heard it stops alot of engine bay heat
