Bought an immaculate HQ front end off ebay. Stuff is mint. Its at home now, HQ tonner panels, single headlight, all there, all matching paint/condition, but delivered in pieces.
Just noticed a small badge on each guard that says "radial tuned suspension". What the? HQ's never had that? Putting the panel next to mine, it looks identical.
Anyone explain that? |

Waaaaaaaaaait a minute...apparently HQ-HZ Tonners, specifically, had the same guards, correct? Could then be HZ tonner guards (RTS introduced) with an HQ apron? |

fellow HQ dude, you have answered you own question correctly, all commercial tonners from HQ-HZ had the quey fronts, the rest of the ute was the same as the model it was built as
to be a commercial nose it would have had the blinkers in the nose between the headlight and the grill, and it would have H O L D E N badges along the top of the nose, if it doesnt have these it is the orginal nose for the guards, or the holes have been filled

Yes it is a commercial nose, now on-sold as i already had a good one.
Its cost me a decent amount (not too much though, very happy), but now i have a full, rust free and original (not repaired) front end. Guards, nose, bonnet, rad support, grille.
Im kind of scared to put it on the car. Haha. |

Not quite. Option BO6 (Ambulance pack) tonners from HJ-HZ had HJ-HZ Premier fronts. Rest were HQ style panels and cowls though. _______________________________________________________ If we all had the same (good) taste, who would buy all the Fords? |

ahh yes you are correct (as always) the numbers of this option would be quite low though wouldnt they
what was the reason for the tonners retaining the HQ fronts?

There were more than you think. I remember seeing them everywhere when they were less than 10 years old and always thought they were owner-built, but many years later realised what a BO6 was.
Tonner was a commercial work-hack. In GMHs opinion no-one cared what they looked like, low maintenance was they key. Low volume, "free" Engineering, the decision makes sense I suppose. Work hack Holden and Commodore always retained the body or panels of the pre-decessor. Look at FB/EK , EH, HR utes and vans - they all carried over the old body. VSIII even sold in parallel with VT until VU was released. All the profit was in the sedan and wagon. I suppose to some extent some parallel might be able to be drawn to the HJ coupe retaining the HQ rear end, ie low volume so re-use the old tooling?

Dave, funnily enough i have one...got this car as a fully prepped charity basher, lights, stickers, bullbar, jacked up, the whole deal. Had a good look underneath though and it seemed the worst it had copped was dirt roads. Do dings, no big scratches. i did quite well!
Still got that bullbar, mounts straight into the bumper bolt holes in the front rails.
Oh, and we can thank Dr Terrys books for putting my fears to rest, and you guys for confirming :-) |

you can pick them up cheap sometimes, the HJ-X-Z commercial fronts, as many guys rebuilding 1 tonners dont like them. i.e. $100 - $150 its a cheap way of picking up a HQ radiator support panel.

Youre not the only one mate. If it wasnt for this find of mine, i was off to Greg at Classic Oz Wreck for a "no rust, never had rust" radiator support. Was over $300 if i remember, so coming from him its a good price guide. |
