I have often wondered what Holden does with all new cars that are surplus to requirements ie when a new model comes out.

Do they send them to Government Auction, leave them on the lot until they are sold (massive discount sales), or just hide them from the general public unless someone wants one?

For instance, if they have 50,000 unsold cars and they start making 10,000 new model cars, what happens to the unsold cars?

Just curious on the process.

Run out, dealers get massive incentives to sell existing stock etc. I cant imagine a big Company stuffing up that bad too often that 50,000 old models were left over. Unless it was an EA Falcon!

Lets say Ford are making 200 Falcons a day, and in the last ten days the sales slow right down, then they may have a couple thousand to get rid of. Then they offer them say $4000 cheaper than the new model, and for a lot of people that is a great incentive to buy.

Run outs at dealers. I remember buying my VSIII ute in December 2000, well into VU production. It was a manual white S pack, last of the manuals and heavily discounted - it was about $24000 drive away, and had to be delivered from Melbourne. They were still selling off column auto Holden examples in February and they were as low as $20,000 which was awesome value when compared to a VU which was about $24,000 plus on roads.

They also try to hide the fact that a new model is coming so that they can sell off the outgoing model stocks before the new one arrives. If they are still left with the old model then they sell it off at a sizable discount.

A mate of mine got a red manual EB1 for $5,700 off because the EB2 was a week or two away. I nearly bought a 1992 VP1 Vacationer in June 1993 it had never been off the dealers lot but they were prepared to do a very good deal.

As for the hiding new models I enquired about ordering a VS wagon in about may 1995 and the dealer stated that they were not allowed to talk about those yet and that I could order a then current VR if I wished. I told them that I would see them in a month or two.

Not long after she recieved a call from the dealer, telling her that the colour was orderd was not not available, and they could happily give her a few free extras if she accepted another colour..
She accepted this deal and recieved a 2005 astra...

& if they dont sell at the dealers they go into storage or stay on the show room floor, take the Holbrook Holden dealership, a few years ago sold a brand new VL Wilkenshaw group A, only some 12 years after it had been built... see here http://amcs.modus.com.au...-495km-vl-gpa-walkinshaw

or if they are imported, like the lantras of the late 80s, they sit in a paddock & get a new Adr plate some 2 to 3 years after they were built...
we owned a Jackaroo, it was sold as a 92 Mod, but was built & imported in late 91..

HOLDEN The Great Way to Move

This is very common with imported cars.

The ADR compliance plate is fitted to the cars on the day the engine sits in the car at the factory, if the car is built in Australia. The means that the build date & compliance date will the the same (probably even the same day!). But with imported cars the ADR plate is fitted when the cars leave their storage point in Australia. With quick selling (popular) cars the difference between the build date & the compliance date is often only 1 or 2 months. With slow selling (& prestige) cars the difference can be up to several years. They dont remove one ADR plate & then fit a later one. It is not legal to tamper with the ADR Compliance plate.

Ive seen Hondas & Mazdas in the 80s with compliance dates over 2 1/2 years after their build dates. Im not singling them out, many Europeans were similar.

Gday Dave
Although sold registered, insured etc as a HQ- it was still a HG on the compliance plates. To me it was no more than an oversight buy the dealer and my father. Back then these things were not so important - it was just a new car - what actual model it was seemed to be a mute point to all concerned.

Interestingly I bought a VZ SSZ Crewman new. Mine has a lot of the 6 litre parts fitted. Later in the last ones to leave the factory some of these were fitted with the VE motor- the 6.0 litre V8. So a little bit of history repeating itself.

In the US new cars not sold are actually scrapped! There is a buyer in in Rancho Cucamonga California called Bakers outlet. He is one of many that buys up unwanted new cars and other unwanted new parts etc and on sells them. Its a legitimate sale but these cars/parts are not covered by factory warranty. i was there in 1997 and saw 12 new Chev cab chassis van/trucks ( like a cut van with no cabin behind seats) These were new 1991 vehicles that hadn't sold and were sitting in storage. They were to be scrapped so Bakers outlet bought them to save them from this fate.

Hi Andrew.

To meet the new Euro 5 emission standards all Jan-06 onwards VZs got the L76 version of the 6.0 Gen 4 V8. When the VE sedan was released in July 06, while the utes & wagons remained in production until Sept-07. This was probably the longest model overlap there has ever been for GM-H. These late utes & wagons got lots of VE bits.

Gday Terry
My Crewmans build date was 25-11-05 - one day before the wife's Bday - and I bought it new from The mad mile at Moorooka Bne on my sons Bday 3-3-06. This may give an indication on how long the VE parts had been used. I recall the Holden mechanics enthusiastically pointing out how the last of the Gen 3's had things like the 6.0 litre throttle body amongst other things. The SSZ Crewman was limited to only 750 units. For my money that made it quite a rare factory Holden so was worth buying new - aside from being practical!
On a side note Terry - what book chain in NZ would your latest book be distributed through? I still want one!

Your sign off from my experience isnt far off the truth: Think of a figure you reckon you can build it for- then triple it! I have many dairies full of my notes on what customers though they could build cars for - and the end figure it worked out to be. Just a shame they didn't spend it all in my shop!

Hi Andrew.

I'm not sure of the book store situation in NZ, but you could just get it mail-order from Aust.

Try http://www.topgear.com.a...oduct.php?product_id=498

or http://www.pitstop.net.a...ts/page/query/plu/21948/

or e-mail me with your details on:- terry at bebco dot com dot au & I will post you an autographed copy.

By ordering from overseas, I believe you will not pay any Aust GST or NZ local taxes.

Dr Terry
