Hi there
Has anyone repainted their VN-VS engine covers in the factory style finish?
Im waiting on a quote to Soda blast them (the paints starting to flake off in places) - won't be cheap.
Local mag wheel restoring place wants 250-300 for the set (rocker, fuel rail and throttle body covers)
More than I can afford anyway.
Any paint at Superc#$p I can use or something??
Cheers
Jeremy

You can do it your self. You may find it will take 20 hours and $50 of sandpaper to get every single bit of old paint off, then another few $ in materials and paint to get them finished and how would you feel if they started flaking off again? Then again, give it a go and if it all turns out ace and never flakes off, then you have done well. Unfortunately with flaking paint, it means all old material has to come off. If it is old or rare - Cut it! http://www.ehlimo.com.au/ |

Ive used paint stripper on a centre front piece that I polished up - paint came off in one clean go.
I de-activated it & washed the surface thoroughly with thinners, but I then went on to polish it, so I cant say how well new paint would have stuck.
Do you have a compressor? It would be easy enough to do at home & get good results. Im not that keen on aerosols, as the colours never seem to be what you need (unless its black) - its better to get it mixed to a formula & spray it yourself.

I have 2 paint codes for the engine covers, but no conclusive data to say which is definately the one: 4J023 - Opel Silver 4J025 - Platinum silver Looking at the formula on an online site: http://www.glasurit.com/...1frameset.php?language=1Opel silver also comes up as Asteroid, which with that code was used on bumpers from the era too, so Id lean more towards the Platinum silver. The 4 at the start of the code denotes the paint type, which is different to the 1 (solid) & 2 (metallic) used for the regular exterior paints at the time. I dont know what type it is. One thing I have learnt with those covers, is you dont need heatproof paint on them, they dont get hot enough. A number of cars I know of, have repainted them using normal vehicle exterior paint, with great results. Yep, rocker covers and engine covers. Also, if you scroll through the VN-VS my commodore sections on streetcommodores.com youll see quite a few with painted rocker & engine covers. http://forum.streetcommo...m/forumdisplay.php?f=123http://forum.streetcommo...m/forumdisplay.php?f=124Im happy to paint them for you. The prep work is a biatch, and is 99% of the time needed to do the whole job - spraying them is the easy part. I have had good results using normal enamel paint on engines. My Wifes Valiant even has body colour acrylic on the rocker cover which has held up fine despite the old 265 running a little hotter than an engine should.
Look at it this way rocker covers rarely get too hot to touch.
Im also inclined to suggest that you got them garnet or bead blasted as this "keyes" the metal which allows the paint to stick better than it can to smooth shiny metal.
Thats just my opinion though and other more knowledgeable people might give a valid reason to disagree.
