Hi i have a 1998 holden suburban 1500 and i have a problem with the head lights, they cut out after about 30 min and then will work again after about 20 min so i think that ther must be a curcit breaker going of somewhere, does anyone know wher this is located. It doesnot blow fuses and has a set of driving lights that were fitted at new Thanks Garry

Sounds like an electrical break. A wire somewhere gets hot which cuts the circuit and then 20 mins later it cools down and connects again. Good Luck. Americans are crap at wiring.

While American wiring is not quite as good as Jap stuff, is way better than anything from Europe.

Too much current thru the thermal circuit sounds like the problem.

It sounds to me like the accessory driving light wiring could be suspect. Its relay may not be wired correctly by the fitter at the dealership.

try cleaning the earths it is possible that dirty earths will create overloads on the circuit causing the circuit breaker to trip.
does it occur with only the headlights on or when all the lights are on?

Hi it only occurs with head lights on and only the head lights cut out and the parking lights stay on.It hapened with the driving lights on and does any one know were the thermal curcit would be located? I have orded a repair manual so hopefully it will tell me where to look. I will replace the relays as soon as i can get them and i have tightened a earth so with all this maybe it wont happen again, will have to test i guess, Garry

hi garry i had one of these cars, headlights were pathetic as you know, mine would cut out on high beam only, i had a auto leccy wire in a relay to cut out thermal load and it didnt work, i think the answer is those one piece plastic headlights instead of the two individuals on each side ala 80 series cruiser. be prepared for more wiring/electrical probs, the computer board in the wiper motor will fail every 18 months or so and you will be stuck without wipers, that is an easy fix though replacement boards are commonly avail at eagle spares etc, fuel pumps are famous for failure, hopefully it wont happen when you have a full tank as it is reaaaaaal heavy. fuel gauges fail, brake light switch on pedal fails, chassis cracks where the steering box bolts on (techie at toowoomba holden warned me of that one!) and prey that your car isnt fitted with LPG. your hand will be in pocket very frequently

Yes i have had a few problems in the 2 weeks that i have owned it, dont buy a car from a S.A. car yard and think you will get it RWC in vic easy. The suburban cut out at least 5 times on a trip from Portland to Mildura so a new fuel pump should arrive tomprrow as well as 2 new relays and a curcit breaker and i am still chacing a pittman arm, front door interior light swith,3rd brake light, but i dont think that i will fit gas at this stage as i bought it for the room on long trips. The cruz dont work, nothing in the back doors work eg central lock, light switch so i wonder about the quality of US cars, i did sell a GU patrol to by a chev so tha was my main aim , Garry

gary,

i worked at eagles for many years, and lemme tell you, that the holden suburban is not half the car that the chev surbuban/tahoe is.
the holden suburban came out of brazil or argentina or somwhere like that(i forget, dont really want to remember those days at eagles)and they had nothing either remotely similar in build quality or options as the US sources ones.
the dash is completely different from the US type for a start, they are something like a chevy S10 type, and then were not up to the rest of the cars wiring and electrical demands, hence the problems always with cruise, wipers etc.
the door handles always break, the A/C always chews compressors and orifice valves, and then there is always the big expense with rotors and fuel pumps and all the other consumables with 1500/2500 suburbans always seem to consume more than any other car.
most(not all) privately imported chev pick ups and suburbans and tahoes didnt seem to have as much drama in the electrical side or steering side, which i put down to good people doing conversions(but i stress, not all are that good)on the US built vehicles, but they still had their far share of brake and suspension maintenance/failure problems, especially if they were lowered etc.
now you know why GM dumped servicing the parts for them, and handballed all the headache to eagle..lucky for you its not a 6.5 diesel...ohh my..

I innovate, never imitate..
