All the above comments are very valid.
From my perspective, I would think the only advantage you have is that your mate would be able to assess the vehicle prior to purchase.
I would not think there is any financial benefit in having a contact unless they own a shipping company. As AMunro327 mentioned, $3400 is what you could expect to pay. Probably more depending on which part of the country the car is from, West/East. $5000 can be a realistic bench mark. I believe GST also needs to be paid on a genuine value of the car. There are companies out there that specialise in importing cars that you can look for & buy yourself. They follow the process, clear it through customs/quarantine & have insurance etc. Some will deliver to your door. I see it as a minefeild. I would prefer to pay a professional rather than try to figure out my way around the many pitfalls.
If all you are after is an American bit of iron, consider checking out the local market too. There are always cars available here. The right one for you might be just around the corner rather than half way round the world.
Having said that, there is also the romance of doing the trip, searching for & finding the car, then having it shipped over here.
What would you prefer, a stock Monaro of any configuration that costs the earth, or a Big Block 60s Camaro that may set you back 1/4 the price?
Mmmmm, did someone say Big Block?
