Hello everyone, new here and i must say what an excellent site this is. Today i looked at a vk i am thinking of saving it is a 10/1985 build 5L 4 speed but on the compliance plate it states the engine as xv7? Would anyone here be able to shed any light on this for me please as i thought it should be L31. Also the engine number is VG554xxxx.
Cheers
Garry

V7X is a 304 manual late 1985. L31 is a 308. VG is the correct prefix for V7X.

Some of them for highway patrol had HDT engines in them. Others like one a friend of mine used to own didnt have the B cast heads but had the HDT inlet, air cleaner and windage tray.

The VG prefix V7X engines are pretty good, but are a let-down in comparison to the VB prefix 304 manuals that preceded them (5000 were built, and they were effectively a HDT SS engine)

By the time yours was built, the V7X/VG got the good rods, 955 (like the Brock) inlet manifold, and other good bits - but they missed out on the big valve heads.

Cheers,

Mick

That would explain my mates engine. I have the heads, inlet and air cleaner here, the carb went onto a SBC in an MQ Patrol. He changed the heads to red pollution heads and KC25308 manifold so he could fit L34 valves with hardened seats.

The fact its an SL (K69) and a 5L (T) means it can only be an SS or a Police car.
Obviously its not an SS.... (the model code reads different for an SS).

All hose items you mentioned are fitted to police cars. I had one too, a white VH, it was manual, and had an oil cooler as well. It was an ex-SA HWP car, and still had the multicore cable running up the A-pillar, with the excess coiled up above the drivers headlining.

L31, M40 & GU4 are 5L, trimatic & 3.08:1 diff, so its obviously seen some changes since it served on the force.

Cheers,

Mick
