justgm has got it. The TH700 changed its name to 4L60 for the 1990 model year, (in the U.S.A & Aust) this appeared in the 1990 (XX8) VN upgrade. It then became the 4L60-E when the electronic version was released for VR & then 4L65-E when the unit with the stronger gearset arrived in the VY series for the AWD & cab-chassis models) Dr Terry _______________________________________ There are only 3 types of people in the world. 1. For some reason Ive heard the Camira engine is from a Nissan Pulsar so Ill have a guess that Nissan made the box as well.

3. Byron, Warren & BS cannot enter.
Does that mean I can have a go, because I reckon Id get 8 of them off the top of my head, and have to confirm the 9th. The metallic paint one would get me.

2. As before, any Holden means any car normally accepted as a Holden & wearing a Lion badge (BTW the HQ-WB Statesman does have Lion badges). No Chevs, Vauxhalls, Bedfords or Pontiacs etc.
I think a lot of people missed this point, as theres a lot of Stato answers! Cheers, Mick _______________________________________________________________ Judge a successful man not on how he treats his peers, but on how he treats those less fortunate. |

Being very careful to read:
" 1. Australian Holden means just that, any Holden built in Australia at a GM-H factory." it rules out Piazza & a lot of the obscure Isuzu & Suzuki models.
1. Which series Australian Holden was first to feature Variatronic (variable effort) power steering ? VP Calais in Sept 1991, closely followed by VQ Series 2 Statesman in Dec 1991 (and VQ have "Statesman by Holden" on their badge!
2. What was the first Holden (of any type) to feature a fuel injected engine. If its any type, then I reckon Diesel Gemini. It its petrol only, then I reckon VK Commodore.
3. What series Australian Holden had the first modern ABS system ? (The Delco Moraine anti-lock drum system in the mid 70s does not count.) VP Calais again.
4. What was the first Holden (of ay type) to be factory fitted with a turbo-charged engine ? Getting back to Oz-made rules out the Piazza, so that would be the VL Commodore if you consider the old Normalair-Garrett stuff a post-production option, as it was dealer fitted.
5. What series Australian Holden was the first to feature factory-fitted cruise control ? VC Commodore SL/E
6. What series Holden was the first to feature metallic paint ? This is too far before my time!
7. What company manufactured the manual transaxle (gearbox) used in the Camira ? GM s "Hydra-Matic" division - its a TH125.
8. When did the TH700 automatic change its name to the 4L60 & why ? Followed GMs uniform numbering change - as explained above
9. What was the smallest engine fitted to a Holden SS or Commodore SS (not counting the Torana LX SS) ? 3.8L in two models: VP 3.8L V6 SS, VT 3.8L supercharged SS.
10. What was the first Holden (of any type) that came standard with a 5-speed manual gearbox ? Diesel Gemini, followed by the VH 2.85L Commodore in Sept 1981 (beat the JB camira!)
Cheers,

Ok, here are my answers.
1. It was the VP Calais, it beat the VQ series II Statesman & Caprice by just 1 month. I awarded 0.5 if you said VQ series II. 2. Trick question. The answer is the Rodeo Diesel in Dec 1980. If you said VK Commodore, which was the first petrol fuel injected car I awarded 0.5.BTW, the TE Gemini Diesel was released in April 1981. 3. The first Aussie Holden with modern (Bosch) ABS was the VQ series II Caprice. I awarded 0.5 for VP. It was introduced to the VP as a running change after the VQ II was released. The very first Holden with modern ABS was the Calibra (it beat the VQ II by 1 month), but we werent counting imports.. 4. Another trick question. The answer is the Jackaroo 2.2 Turbo Diesel in late 1984. If you answered YB Piazza (early 1986) I awarded 0.5. If you answered VL turbo youre simply incorrect. There was no Rodeo Turbo Diesel until 1990. 5. The first factory cruise control was seen in the VC SL/E. It beat the WB Statesman range by a month or 2. I awarded 0.5 for WB. 6. The first metallic paint was seen in the FX series. 7. Isuzu manufactured the Camira manual transaxle. TH125 is an automatic. 8. The TH700 was re-named the 4L60 for the 1990 model year (VN XX8 upgrade) & was named the 4L60-E for the electronic version for VR onwards. It was due to the fact that GM in the U.S. restructured their various engine & gearbox manufacturing entities into one, called GM-Powertrain. GM-Powertrain then re-named all their transmissions using a new, more descriptive coding system. 9. The smallest SS engine was seen in the VT SS, where they were available with the 3.8 V6 Supercharged engine. There was also the limited build VP SS V6. These are smaller than the HQ & VH SS models, which had the 253/4.2 V8. 10. The first Holden with a standard 5-speed was the TD Gemini SL/E (1978).

Its the other way around. The Nissan N13 Pulsar used Family II engines which are the same style as the Camira, made in the same factory in Melbourne. Holden also re-badged & sold this car as the LD Astra. Dr Terry. _______________________________________ There are only 3 types of people in the world. 1. Those who make things happen. 2. Terry,
I did read or hear somewhere that the VS V6 SS Commodore was to qualify for a type of race class. Is this true?
If so would this make the V6 SS the race special? That would make interesting conversations amoungst their owners.

Yes, Warren but it was a VP, not a VS. It was a genuine homologation special. It was basically a VP SS but with a V6 engine, a 3.27 rear axle & re-mapped mem-cal etc. It was P.O. A9H. It was raced in Group N, which was for stockers & back then it was a 2-horse race between the VP & the EB Falcon. From memory is was a close contest.
