I posted previously about an ex-Hong Kong Statesman I wanted to buy but in the end it was too far away, too expensive and I think probably too rusty. And now sold, apparently.

Anyway, got myself an 82 De Ville last week in Sydney and am loving it. The old girl needs a bit of work but is presentable and drivable until I get the funds to take her off the road and fix her up.

The main thing I want to get fixed asap is the aircon. Theres a receipt from 2008 for air con repairs but something must've gone wrong after this as the lines to the compressor are cut and the compressor's gone. The condensor is in place but the receiver dryer (? not sure, the silver 'bottle' that's supposed to bolt into the aircon box on the firewall) is gone too.

I was planning to get a used compressor from a wrecker for abt $100 (and the other silver thingy if servicable) and get an aircon specialist to service it and re-install. I want it to look factory standard as possible, so don't want a new super dooper compressor.

I am not sure if the evaporator is there or not, but I think it shouldn't be too hard to check.

Any tips on who's good in Sydney (pref inner-west) for this job and any ballpark figures for a total aircon overhaul?

Another option I'd like to try is get the serviceable used parts from the wrecker and bolt it up myself and get a regas kit to see if that works first - any thoughts on this? It's a simple car that I'm generally familiar with on the tools but I've not touched the aircon system before.

Thanks guys,

Phil.

Reciever drier is not a servicable part, need a new one. It normally bolts to inner guard and is black. It will also have a low pressure switch on it which will need to be wired in under todays laws.

No such thing as a recharge kit, only qualified persons are allowed to buy or handle gas. (you would also need vacumm pump, guauges, nitrogen charge etc.

You can plumb the whole thing and get someone to charge the system, but as for performance, that is when you will find if the compressor you purchased was ok.

just keep in mind that when you got problems with air, its expensive, and can be a pain in the bumm thats why you see so many compressors with no belts hanging off them even in later model cars.
