Approx $350 for a working box, plus get it serviced while its out ($80) and get them to change to torque converter seal while they are at it. It may not be that much dearer to get yours overhauled, but may be as much as $1,000 depending upon what is wrong.

Steve, Greg above^^ should be able to sell you a secondhand box if yours is too far gone to rebuild.

Whether or not you rebuild yours or buy a new one, a basic understanding of transmission development and some technical terms will help you with your purchase. This video gives a fairly good understanding of some of the terminology you may come across.

change the converter too, as it will be filthy and will shorten the life of your new trans.
