went and saw the bloke at the local exhaust shop today, and he informed me that the legal limit for a pre 1980 car is 90dB.how loud is that? i want to get a dual system, but its only a v6 so he said he would split it off the extractors, and have a 3" chrome tip either side. my real question is will a 3" tip look a bit stupid, ie too big? i want it to look good, but i dont want something oversized on it..

If it were me, I would go a dual 2" system from the extractors/cats with dual mufflers, dual ressies and 2.5" tips.

In my opinion 3" dual tips will look too big... unless they are oval (3" wide).

"...how loud is that?..."
Thats a very tough question to ask on a forum. Its "string length" territory.
A six will always sound like a six, regardless of straight or V configuration.
Personally, I am not a fan of trying to make a motor look or sound like something it isnt.
I prefer a single system for exhaust on most, if not all motors. I fail to see the upside of putting a droning twin system on a V6.

a loud straight thru twin system on a V6 sounds like poo! go a 2 1\4 system or maybe even 2 1/2 single you will also loose power if you dont have enough back pressure as you will get poor scavenging and it will backfire or pop when slowing down and you will sound like a tool aswell as decrease your engine life.

yeah sorry about that utility8, i just re read it and its a pretty stupid question haha. im not really trying to make it sound like an 8 because i know it never will, im more just wanting a more throaty sound. my mate has a hr with a 202 with a 2 inch system which sounds ok but i want a bit louder than his. also, i told the guy that i had heard that a twin system on a 6 sounds like s***, and he told me than anything can sound like anything, it all depends on the mufflers etc.

I completely agree with the muffler statement - Ive heard v6 twins that sound great.

Having said that if it were me I would go the single 2 1/2" with a straight through muffler and ressie (without them the v6s often drone something fierce around 2000-2500rpm). I was presuming you realy wanted a dual system above.

202s will always sound different to v6s imho, they are much more likely to be mistaken for a v8 (esp if they have a cam).

na im not hell bent on getting a dual, i just think they look sweet, better than just a single. well my engine is only a 173 (haha) and its definately no 253-slaying monster, but i am planning on throwing in a nice biggish cam soon. on that topic, how much does anyone think a lumpy (but not ridiculous) cam will cost installed?

I have a nicely worked 202 with 2 1/2 inch single and one straight through muffler. Sounds awesome, gets complimented often (twice this week).

My mate has a very worked 202, twin 1 3/4 with one straight through muffler on each. Sounds good at idle and creeping around a driveway, sounds like a rice burner accelerating, sounds decent up top. Its also lost him a few horses as its too much for even an angry 202. Its not the best way at all.

Motor plays a part: carbs and big cams are always going to sound tough. Injection dulls it. But really, its more about the exhaust.

Im honestly yet to hear a V6 commy that sounds GOOD. They sound ok, sure, but thats it. A slight rumble at first, then your typical droney, loud rasp after that. usually from being too big.

EFI smooths the sound out heaps - ok for v8s but not us 6cyl blokes!! :(

My custom cam was $260 + about $60 for lifters (a must with a new cam) and install was done in a driveway so not too sure about the extra cost of labour? Maybe budget $800 and if you get it for under $500 you did real well..? Just do a ring around but if you are in Sydney send me an email and Ill give you the number of a mechanic mate who should be able to do it at a better price from his home business (the cam that is - not the exhaust).

I disagree. I reckon the best sounding Holden (cast iron) V8 is the EFI 5L from VN-VS with a nice exhaust on it.

These injected 5 litres sound far nicer than any 4-barrel carbd 308 or 304 that preceeded them.

Cheers,

Mick

To be honest, were talking modified motors more, i think. Nobody claims a stock 186 ever sounded that nice, even with an exhaust. But a worked old motor, for me, always sounds sweetest :-)
