Hi all. are the aluminium plates( vin/body id/adr)on hk-ht-hg plain mill finish on GTSs from all plants or some painted engine bay colour? This may have being covered before but i can't remember it. Also what should the lower fuel tank be coated with,zinc cad,gal,paint ? Dave |

On a Monaro from Brisbane or Melbourne, the body plate is painted the colour of the car because it was fitted before the shell was painted. It was then painted over in black when the black sections were done. The other plates were put on later so they will be the natural aluminium colour. Other plants had all the plates the aluminium colour. The fuel tanks were made from galvanised steel and have a gal finish. Some cars appear to have been touched up for sale and have black paint on the bottom half of the tanks.

Anyone have a Mosman Park HK-HG? I assume the BODY and ADR plate (if ADR fitted) are naked as they would have been fitted in Elizabeth?

Are you sure about that DA? Galvanised steel would not make a very good fuel tank. Up until the 90s most vehicle fuel tanks were made from Terne plated steel.

You are probably right Absinth, I gues the best description would be gal finish.

Actually Warren it is probably the worst description you could use.
Galvanising is the process of hot-dipping steel into molten Zinc. It is not suitable for drawing once coated as the Zinc coating is thick, quite brittle and tends to flake off during the drawing process.
Terne plated sheet is cold rolled sheet steel that is hot-dip coated with a lead-tin alloy of 90% lead and 10% tin. The coating has a dull grey finish, is very ductile and has lubricating characteristics that enhance formability in drawing. IE: pressing out fuel tanks. It was also used in the manufacture of oil filter, fuel filter and air filter elements because of its excellent corrosion performance when in contact with petroleum fuels. I believe it was also used for steel brake lines.

I suppose what I ment was gal finish is silverish and many would just call it that. But as you say if you look at gal finish it is normally course.
If it was gal it would be done when the tank was completed as gal plate will not weld together.
Now I know the corrct material, instead of silver finish. Is this the same finish on things like scuff plates?

No, the high Lead content of Terne coating makes it not very scuff resistant. At a guess Id say early Holden scuff plates may have been Tin plated as Tin plating was used on some car parts in the 40s and 50s but if they are plated it would likely be Zinc or the more expensive Chrome plated. Fuel tanks made with Terne plated steel are not welded together, the seams are folded and soldered together. I havent looked at Holden fuel tanks but I assume this is also the way they are joined. Thanks fof everbodys input. I guess what iam asking is what coating to put on the underside of used fuel tank on a full restioration when everything else is fresh? Dont want the fuel tank it let it down. Dave
