i heard that there are speed dampeners in power steering boxes fitted to holdens,i was recently going to buy a powered set up for my hk ute(a hk set up for $250) but a mate told me to steer clear of it cause at high speeds if you twitch the wheel it can possibly make you turn way too sharp and start you spinning in circles, any body heard of this,me mate is very good with cars so i believe it to be true, just wondering when they started to install the dampener so i can use that model or later instead,i have never had any experience with power steer and am also wondering if its a big job, ones i have seen look fairly basic to set up on the old rack and pinion types..

You probably should have posted this in the Technical Talk section, might have resulted in a few more responses. Regarding your question......

Ive never heard of speed dampeners for HK-T G power steer set ups. The claim that they can make you "turn way too sharp" is not right either. That was covered off in a thread about a month or so ago.
You also shouldnt think that, if you buy a second hand unit for $250, thats all it will cost you.
If the cylinder is not serviceable, it will cost a few hundred bucks for a new one.
The hoses are probably the original 40 year old units and, to be on the safe side, should be replaced. Cost can be up to about $400 or so.
The pump might need to be reconditioned or replaced. Cost can be from about $40 (DIY) to about $200.
The Valve Unit will probably need to be reconditioned. About $60 DIY, dont know what the cost would be if you have to take it to a specialist to do that job.
The second hand unit has to be for the same setup as your car (e.g. 6 cyl, Chev V8 or Aussie V8) because there are some differences in the Pump, Pitman Arm, Idler Arm, Pulleys etc. etc.
Oh, and by the way, HK-T-Gs dont have rack & pinion steering.
