Gday all,
Just wondering if anyone has an idea of the air compressor size needed for spraying, primer top coats, etc as there are many sizes out there and some blokes say that one size is good and then the next bloke says different, if anyone has sprayed @ home and been happy with outcome let us know what size ltr cfm etc

I have a 17cfm because I do a bit of sandblasting, but I have used those little $99 cheapies for painting the ute and got a presentable job. most of the result is in the preparation, no matter how big the compressor or how good the gun, crap preparation will give a crap job.
If you only want to paint a daily driver i would go for the cheap compressor, they are lot smaller and take less space in the shed, can be carted around easy, as far as tank size goes the small tank is not a problem as you dont spray continously so you wont run out of puff. Personally I prefer a small tank with a big compressor. The reason is that the air is used at the same rate, and the compressor has to push a certain amount of air for a certain job, so it doesnt matter if it runs continuously or intermittently, except for the noise.
Dont forget to run at least one water trap water can really wreck a paint job.

Thanks john, painting of the hk is a little way off yet, but primer time is near so with your info i should be able to find one. The one ive been looking at is a 2.5hp,40lt,6-8 bar operating pressure and 112lt/min,this should do the trick hey.( $179.00 from supercheap autos)

IMO i would not buy a cheap one especially if you plan on using it a fair bit. Cheap ones are good for inflating the odd car/bike tyre but if you are wanting one to spray with also i would spend the bit extra and get something that is going to last. In todays world you really get what you pay for and cheap usually means nasty.

you can spray primer with just about any compressor,but for colour use a bigger one,so that the air pressure stays constant enough so the whole car has the same finish etc(air pressure).there is enough variables in painting
without adding to them...jmo(im spray at the moment with help"a pro")

As far as a cheap compressor not lasting, how much is it going to be used really? Probably paint a car about every 2 years, so not exactly going to be worn out.
I have one of those cheapies I picked up for $10, it works ok. But I would not use it for a flash paint job.

JOHNS Right ,it depends how much your doing,get a cheapy for prep work,then hire a big sucker(well blower) for the colour and clear. just my opinion.PREP,PREP,PREP, you can spray over sh!t but Itll just be sprayed sh!t. This is an easy one for me... i too was looking for a good cheap compressor... i ended up spending $900 on a 16 CFM McMillan three headed thing and its a killer ! And i didnt know what i was missing with all of the air tools that i now own ...Die grinder, Random sander, ratchet, rattle gun, air saw...and it makes body repairs a breeeze... its so easy to do things now with air tools...oh, and i am gonna paint my Kingswood and my Panel van, and i realised that with a compressor you really do get what you pay for !
