Well the monaro turned up and I was duped. Dont buy sight unseen. Now to make the best of the situation. The rear parcel shelf is rusted out near the boot and would be easier to replace. I am thinking of cutting it out near the pillars, the mounting brackets on the rear inner guards and the mounting brackets on the side of the boot. The rust comes up about 100mm along the rear bottom channel of the rear windscreen and down about 100mm on the passenger side boot. Is this feasible? If I got a parcel shelf (from a HK/HG/HT sedan) that covered the above area would it fit the monaro? I also have a rust repair section for the top part of the boot so that will also need to go in. As a general question is there any difference in using a MIG welder without gas to do the repairs? I have photos but could not work out how to upload them. Thanks for your assistance.

Sedan parcel shelf is the same from join to join as far as I know, although for some reason they list as different numbers - maybe the outer pieces are part of the shelf, although its probably just the bit under the rear window frame that differ. The side bits that join to the inner quarters are different, and the braces down to the wheelhouse are different.

The top part of the parcel shelf is in alright condition (other then speaker holes), it is the rear piece that is rusted out. The piece that comes up at an almost 90 degree angle, is curved and has the piece of flat steel that is attached to the rear of this and goes from one side of the boot to the other. Does this form part of the parcel shelf (or is it referred to as something else) and is this the part that you say is different between the sedans and monaro? Could you modify a sedan one to fit? Thanks.

That bit is different. Rare Spares do the panel behind the rear window:

I cant vouch for how well it fits though. Phils Rotaries may be doing that piece too.

ht307monaro,

I replaced the parcel shelf in my Monaro using a HG sedan parcel shelf. The large flat section of the parcel shelf where the speaker holes are is the same. You will need a rare spares rear window panel (https://rsp-secure.com/Shop/e-cat/Products/Images/RP2022.jpg) and unpick the sedan one which, from memory is about 10mm thinner than a monaro one.

The only other section that was different was the upright peice of metal (from the parcel shelf to under the rear window section). The monaro one is more upright (http://gallery.oldholden.com/monarotraders/hkmonaro/arrival/23022009041.jpg.html)
than the sedan. The sedan section was on more of an angle (http://gallery.oldholden.com/monarotraders/hkmonaro/rustrepair/07052009014.jpg.html) and was completely flat all the way along, whereas the monaro one had a groove in the middle of it.

It fit ok and replaced a heap of rust so those 2 little things didnt worry me at all.

Matt/All
When you replaced that parcel shelf with the HG one (from sedan) and who said the upright piece at the rear was at a bit more of an angle (was the finished height the same?), did this maintain the same profile for the rare spares weld in section, or did you need modifications (ie. to allow the windscreen to fit correctly)? Also on my car the piece for where the rare spares section is to go has already been cut out. Underneath here you can see the 2 boot hinges but they still have a piece of steel attached to them on the top. This steel appears to have gone all the way across the rear of the boot, but the centre section has been cut out. Is this different from the weld in rare spare section (it appears it may have been underneath it)? How did this replacement section fit for you? Also when you speak of unpicking the weld I think I understand what you mean but exactly how do you go about doing it and what tools are required? I know heaps of questions but your assistance is appreciated. Alex
