I had a 5 speed VH box behind my stock 173 in a HG.
Went extremely well, BUT dont be to hard on them as they are weak.
I am gentle on gearboxs and diffs, so it wasnt a hassle for me.

Hey Crash,

Ive just been through the hassle of getting Commie 5 speed recoed. It was originally out of a VH with a blue 2.85 ltr (186). Ive put it into a VK that had a 4 speed.
The reco kits are scarce and certain parts are rarer. Just be aware that that Borg Warner supplied these boxes to Ford(XD to XF shape) and Sigma(unsure what years of production) so certain kits and peices are interchangable.
The reco kit that was used on mine hade Sigma written on it. And was sourced in Melbourne (I live SE QLD)and was found by the "off chance" So when sourcing bits for the 5 speed, ask for Ford or Sigma bits as well.
Make sure you get the 5 speed tailshaft and speedo cable as they are different to the 4 speed and that way you have something to modify and dont have to go to the extra expense of having something created to suit.
They are not the strongest box in the world either.
I would also suggest maybe looking into the cost of a stronger box Celica, Supra or a T5 and deceide what would be better? As in a gear box they may cost more now but will last longer, have less hassles for repairs and maintenance and take more of a flogging.

Hope this helps.

Nicho
