Hey all, i just signed up.

Looking for a bit of help so here we go:
Just looking to see if anyone here knows anything about id tags etc on older cars like a hx gts sedan im looking at please.
Just trying to find out if its genuine and it all seems legit.

The chassis was painted at some stage and has been sanded back to expose the chassis number, are these numbers supposed to look neat and straight? because these are slightly off, it just seems a little weird... and tag says its auto but has 4 speed manual. is there any other way to check it is genuine... other numbers? certain parts to look for etc etc? here are the details, any help would be greatly appreciated.

The BODY tag and the VIN tag match and both are off a 4 door GTS.
The original car was a TH400 so for it to be a 4spd its been changed (or something has changed).
The chassis number will be about right for a 6/76 HX as HJs were still being built in 6/76, so youd expect a HX to have an early chassis number with a 6/76 ADR plate.
H893431 is about right also for a 6/76 HX. I have a 6/76 HJ recorded with H891954.
So my guess is all the plates do match.

However it isnt easy at all, maybe impossible to know if the body belongs to the plates. So I guess it begs the question then - does it matter? (if you cant tell that is). One thing that comes to mind though is to see if the body has a TH400 speedo cable hole to the passengers side of the steering column. Big, rough sawed hole about 32mm diameter. If its not there its not the original body for the car.

Chassis number stamps can be rough, as can engine number stamps. Depends upon the care factor of the guy doing it!

Oh also just to clarify on the chassis number.

Are the letters/numbers done individually or as one stamp together because some of them look like they are done individually like one may lean to the left then next slightly to the right then a number is straight etc etc....

Cheers.

normal, ive seen them stamped all over the place, 7s look like Ls coz they are upside down, just remember, back then, minimum wage assembly line workers, most could hardly read or write properly and they had cars moving down the line..thay had to do it the best way they could
