Guys I need your help. Ive searched for this topic for ages and I've read that the proper way to get the sump off is to remove the engine but I'm trying not to. Can barely swing a cat in my carport.

I'm neck deep into fixing a stuff-up with incorrectly fitting a harmonic balancer and partly crushng the woodruff key in the keyway. After ages with a Dremel and careful prising out, luckily the keyway appears okay.

Anyway, I really want to get the sump off to flush the filings from cutting the woodruff key and to find a missing piece of the timing case (don't ask...). I was thinking about replacing the rear main seal while there.

I've taken off all the sump bolts but of course the transmission oil cooler lines and sump pick-up are in the way of getting the sump out. I began to try to loosen the trans lines last night but the alloy is soft and I didn't want to strip the nut. Maybe some CRC?

Is the easy way to jack up the engine (taking off two engine mounts?) to get the sump off? Where do I place the jack - can I just tilt the engine on one side, with both mounts disconnected or is that going to stuff up the crossmember mount? The car is up on two car stands at front jacking points.

Any help appreciated. I'm fast learning for my engine rebuild I'm planning for in two years, but the rate I'm going I'll have to do it by next week...

Sorry I dont have the answer you want, take it out,it seems to me it will
have more problems than that.P.S. if you have to,and its not a show car
cut the trans lines before you do damage to the connections.

I did this when restoring my brothers HJ, did not have to remove the botom end, so left in car and jacked the engine up and placed timber inbetween the mounts and the chassis. It was tight and from memory I had the heads off for reco.

It is a tight fit.

I put a piston in number 8 in my HX in the car and it was easy.
I just jacked the trimatic auto up all the way, and the sump came out with no problem. maybe you may have to turn the crank if she dont want to come out.

Ive done it once, when I was young and naive. Had to replace a rear main seal on the Sandman and it was a pain in the butt. Had to jack the engine up a mile and it took me and dad nearly a day to do. The next time I did it in the Statesman I just pulled the engine out. Did the whole lot myself and got it back in the car and running by 3 in the arvo. If Id been real smart I would have quickly whipped the radiator and front end off it to make the lifting in and out a bit easier. Makes it a lot easier to align the engine/box as well.

Okay so I gave up on removing the sump. Spent ages trying to get it out but but its not worth it. The rear main leak is barely a weep and Ive flushed out the sump of the bits I was trying to get out.
