Guy's,
I have an unknown gearbox not even sure what it is out of. Serial number is 993839. Looks like a Torana box I used to have but not quite sure.

Hi Gecko.
The number you have posted looks to be the number of of the side cover of the box.
It should look like the one on the right in this picture.



Those side covers fit 3 and 4 speed boxs.
If you want to date the age of the box there should be a serial number and a date code located on the main housing as shown in these pictures.





If you post both or either of these numbers I can tell you a rough date the housing was cast.
If you just want to confirm that it is a 3 or a 4 speed have a look here.

There are pictures there showing a V8 and a 6cyl 4 spd box to compare to your box.
