Unfortunately Rares don't and apparantly won't be re-producing the HJ-HX GTS dash fascia and as I don't want the RTS bump in my HX Sandman I have had to resort to repairing original fascia's. I did one a while ago but didn't take any photo's of the process so thought I would do so while I repair this one.

Here are some repairs on a HJ Monaro Fascia I have that is broken, had several holes drilled in it and has broken edges.

Broken right through the idiot lights to the clock.

Tied in with wire to hold the the break together and clamped flush.

Back of the break welded up.

Front of the break welded up.

Weld tidied up and sanded smooth.

A broken section along the top needs filling.

Looks much better now.

Demister switch hole filled.

Choke hole filled.

I still need to repair the radio cut outs and a broken mounting lug on the bottom corner.

My plastic welder has come in very handy and the little dremel tool is a godsend for this type of work.

Found this handy dremel tool attachment kit at Trade Tools.

Looks good, those multi-tools are the greatest. I always enjoy reading work in progress posts, nice work.

I cut a mounting lug and the original radio cutout from a standard fascia to repair the GTS facia.

lug and infill welded in.

Test that the radio fits in correctly.

Rubbed back and masked for painting.

Came up pretty good.

I used quick dry enamel this time to paint the fascia, I don't like it as much as the acrylic lacquer I used on the other one I did. Might try water based next time???

Great work mate, obviously too much work involved to make a sideline out of it - but that's what happens when you have no alternative in replacement/repro parts.

Well done and I have put my order in :)

There may not be a worthwhile market for exchange repaired fascias, but I'll bet people would be willing to pay good $ to have broken facias repaired. Like at least the price of a repro Rare's example. I know if I needed my HJ fascia repaired I'd pay at least $300 to have it restored. If you get to doing this the silver fascia in my Premier is 100% original and perfect if you need to colour match.

Byrons dead right ,the originals are well worth repairing and I reckon when they are broke ,they go cheap,do 10 and sell them.Thats what I'd be doing. As Stated before though ,get the right colours.

Thanks for the offer Byron, last time I took my GTS fascia down to the paint shop and had it colour matched in acrylic.. this time I took a good condition Kingswood fascia down and hed it colour matched in quick dry enamel (don't like painting the fascia's with it though so won't ues it again) and the colours are totally different. At first I thought it was a poor colour match but sprayed a little on the Kingswood fascia and it's very close. The GTS fascia's seem to be more of a charcoal colour than the silver on the standard fascia's so at the moment I am not sure what the correct colour is.

I did consider maybe doing them as a sideline thing but it took me nearly the whole weekend to repair that fascia and I still have to paint the outline around the edge. I would have to spend a bit on ways to streamline the process and for the limited numbers of those prepared to pay to have their fascia's repaired it probably wouldn't be worth the effort. I don't mind doing the odd one now and then though.

Not all broken fascia's can be successfully repaired to an acceptable standard as it is impossible to weld the textured area's without the repair being noticeable. This one below is currently on Ebay and I wouldn't even bother with it as it is broken in the bottom textured area's. I like that the seller says it is an easy repair.

I am also repairing a black HJ Sandman GTS fascia at the moment for a friend and am having problems with it as the welding rod and the plastic from the donor fascia are a different shade so even after polishing the repairs are noticeable so I may end up having to paint it. A lot of the HX Kingswood fascia's were made in the USA so the plastic colour is not uniform with the Australian made fascia's. Finding cheap donor standard fascia's without butchered radio holes is also a challenge.

Thanks to a member on the MySandman forums I got the correct GTS dash paint colour and code. After three days of running around I finally got the paint mixed straight from the GMH recipe dated Nov. 1977 at my local Holden dealership.

Send me a bit of broken dash painted in it and i'll compare to my Premier. Will give a good idea how much they fade!
