Can anyone suggest some good lifting points to conect the engine crane to as I need to remove my 350 out to do some work on the front end and change the sump? I have seen those lifting plates on eBay but am a little worried about taking the whole weight of the motor and trans on four bolts conected to the inlet manifold.

Hi and thanks for the info. 65EHPV did you have the gearbox conected as well or just the motor?

No mate, I had access to a hoist, so disconnect gear box first, then pull motor out.

Now the fun begins trying to get all the info on the motor and getting correct parts for it.

Thankfully there is a site like this one with many knowledgeable folks to bounce questions off

i have seen those lifting plated used on a cast iron 454 and T400 come out together.

i am not sure if i like the idea though!

especially with a holden V8, inlet manifolds are hard enough to seal at the best of times.

if your motor has fuellie heads / power pak heads you may not have a bolt hole to lift from either.

in that case, go for water pump and bellhousing bolt with sling

I Agree, with NOT useing one thats why I said use the bolt method, resealing a holden manifold?why risk it.

I don't like the look of the carby adaptors either. Guess everyone has their own method, here's a pic of mine. Two bits of angle iron bolted onto the heads in place of the manifolds. High tensile U bolts attaching chains (could use D Bolts if you want) Old rocker covers temporarily in place to save damaging the others. Didn't even remove the dizzy or starter before pulling the motor out. Pulled the box from the bellhousing, but it would probably come out complete.

Would this work equally as well for a 307? I want to leave the gearbox (powerglide) attached when removing the engine - would this hold the weight? What size angle iron did you use? As I don't have any old rocker covers any suggestions on how to protect the ones I have? Thanks.

Looks like 50x50x6mm angle it would handle the weight no problem.drain gearbox oil first is a good tip--keeo

Yep, a 307 looks identical to the engine in the photo. As Keeo says, it's 50x50x6 angle iron and it will hold the weight of your 307 plus glide. Just remember, "a chain is only as good as its weekest link" so make sure that everything else you use is up to the job. Guess you could use some thick foam or rubber to protet your rocker covers.

Forgot to mention, if you're going to pull the engine & box out as one unit, you'll have to play around a bit with chain lengths and positions to get the weight distribution right, otherwise the engine might come up at too sharp an angle.

If you really wan't to protect your rocker covers during engine removal just remove them and put them aside before you pull the engine out.

Hi Peter

You can use a chain with a bicycle inner tube over it.

I used some 3/4" UNC (I think) 8.8 bolts and the chain you can see to protect the rockers and had a friendly Fastlaner help.....

Pulled the front off (and the bumper bar, but you don't really need to) and removed the bonnet.

Lifted it up with a jack under the gearbox, adjusted lowered it down as we hoisted the crane and when it was free we pushed the car out fromunder it....

Worked a treat.

Can't wait to see if it works in reverse :)

Cheers

Jeremy

My 307 and saginaw was perfectly balanced when lifted by the exhaust manifolds in the rear ram horn.

Came out no problem.
