Can someone clarify for me the difference between a sandman and an XU4 ?

As i understand it

I will use a HX as an example
Id plates state

HX8WM70
18V
L31
M21
GV7
2 SEATER
GVW 1950
Non Brisbane build

Fitted with

Door switches
Gts Wheels
Gts Mirrors
Gts Dash
Full length Head-lining

This would be classed as a sandman XX7

If I remove the Full length Head-lining from the mix it becomes an XU4

Now if I purchased the XU4 with the above specification new and asked for a Full length head-lining to be fitted as an option...

Do I still have an XU4 ?.. I think so

But It is also classed as a sandman XX7 which it isn't..

Confusing isn't it

xx7 only applies to Acaica Ridge QLD cars , not all plants used the option codes on the ID tag. Full headlining was optional on all the range of vans belmont, kingswood and could have been a delete option also.

Not confusing. XU3 is the normal HX Sandman, van or ute. XX7 is the same thing but with passenger tyres. XU3/XX7 are special vehcile packages, no different in reality to XU-1, HQ GTS 4 door, Vacationer wagon etc. XU4 is an HX ute or van, HOLDEN or Kingswood with passenger tyres, complete with bench seat, 3 speed, column auto etc. Very few XU4 vans or utes have turned up with buckets, 4spd etc.

In the above example it could never be an XU4 unless it was built for export to NZ as 18V is Sandman only in HX HOLDEN. Most XU4 HOLDEN wouldn't have the door switches either, or GTS dash or GTS wheels or headlining. XU4 probably wouldn't have carpet either.
The examples that give the most confusion are BO6 HOLDEN vans (especially XU4 examples) and Kinsgwood vans (again especially XU4 optioed examples).

That ain't true at all. XX7 applied to all 4 x plants producing HQ-HZ vans during Sandman. Full headlining was optional but very rare on HJ-HZ HOLDEN and was standard on HX and HZ Kingswood. On non-Sandman HJ-HZ HOLDEN BB7 (full length headlining) was only generally available as part of B47 - Comfort package which got you B30 and BB7. It is very clear in ordering procedures that the full length headlining was generally not released from this package.

Geez. Rebody? It could have been made for NZ but it would have no ADR plate or chassis number if that was the case. I'm almost certain you couldn't delete BB7 from HX XX7. It may well be a very odd Sandman but I'd be wary of spending money on it as it'll be harder to sell than the same thing with evidence of it's headlining intact. Is it 567 or 568 paint?

Email me the ID and i'll look closely at it, and also compare to others around it. Absinth is a very common HX commercial vehicle colour and doesn't help unfortunately.

XX7 Stamping on the tags only appears on the arcaica builds according to:www.monaroparts.com
there were many sandmans built without it and also ambos etc all
would/could have full headlining,do your homework.
the above tags to me state sandman for alot of reasons only once
they are ALL on the same car do they make or break it...just my opinion.

Byron will confirm.

an after thought?...if it had a headlining the ugly rear clip
would probably still be there, check the above monaroparts(byron's) link
to see a photo.

Just because XX7 or XU3 isn't stamped on the BODY plate doesn't mean the vehicle isn't an XX7 or XU3. If that were the case all XV4 & XW8 (HQ GTS sedan) built in Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne would just be V8 Kingswoods as they don't have XV4 or XW8 on their BODY plates either, whereas Acacia Ridge examples (or most of them anyway) have XV4 or XW8 on them.

They would be V8 kingswoods except the trim codes tell them apart and not just a option code stamped on a plate, GTS codes for trim are unique to them, anyhow the guy shouldn`t be to hung up on the fact the car hasn`t got this option code stamped anywhere , If not sure don`t buy it if you already own it enjoy it wether its a sandman or not.

Agree. Same with HX and HZ Sandman, but not just trim codes. GVW, headlining etc do the same job for most of them.

Here is an XU4 HX Kingswood van for you Byron, complete with 253 V8, 4 speed and bucket seats. Fairly rare colour for HX also. Papaya

Thanks mate, I already have it recorded. Mint Julip is relatively common in my Database on HX. Much rarer on HJ.
