What would be the best way to strip back then refinish a set of wheels for my HQ? The set I have currently have a rubbish finish and need a bit of work.  Thanks, Steve. |

A good gritblast and they'll come up like new ones. A coat of etch primer and then 2 hours with the masking tape.
I've had a few sets blasted and its about $30 a wheel I think.

I thought that might be the case. We've just recently got ourselves a blasting box, just needs a trip to the hardware store to get her running. Guess I'll give it a whirl once she's goin.
Might be back to ask about paints in a few days.

I would not grit blast mag wheels. Maybe walnut or plastic bead, or send them to a professional.

i had my rims sandblasted, they came up great, made painting so much easier

You may like to consider having them galvanised as they are acid dipped prior to being dipped in gal, both of which provide the best protection against future rust forming between the center & the rim, plus there is no rush to get them painted & cost is generally a bit cheaper than blasting/dipping, my local gal plant charges around the $15 per rim.

Steel can be sandblasted. I blasted my wide steelies, then had them zinc plated and powdercoated. Great finish and well protected. Cost about $50 each rim.

Is it an easy task to separate the centre from the rim or should I simply blast them in one piece?
Also, of the four wheels, I have two different types of rims. One is a flat rim on the very outter edge, the other three are more rounded on the very outter edge. Any info on which is original?

scratch the part about seperating the rim and centre, not worth the effort for the tiny bit more ease of stripping.
