G'day All, I've read that you can go up 110" over in the Red 253's due to their meaty walls but that seems only when you used with a stroker kit with Chev or Hemi pistons. Just wondering if anyone knows if this can be done with the stock 253 crank & rods and what pistons to use to closely suit the stock little ends? I think that ACL only go up to 60" with Holden 253 pistons. Any help would be greatly appreciated, Cheers.
P.S: I know just go a 308 but I really like the little buggers!

usally 60 thou is considered the most you can go, iv'e seen them out to 80 thou but you'll just get overheating problems if you do that

It's 307 pistons I think they use with a 304/308 to 350 stroker crank. I'm pretty sure that equates to a 250 thou overbore though.

What you want with a 253 or 308 crank is then a pistons with 1.68" (42.67mm) compression height, and .927" (23.55mm) pin diameter. I saw in the ACL catalogue that a 245 Hemi piston is 1.69" compression height and .922mm pin, but a STD one is 3.76" bore which is 135 thou oversize.

To me it's a silly thing to do though, as you could build a 308 or 304 for a lot cheaper, and it'll go better. Or better still stroke a 304 or 308 to 350ci.

Mr dooby....what are we gonna do with you??.lol....To answer your first question..YES ..you can only run a 253 out 110thou if it runs on water!
Dont do it.I know you said you like the little buggers, but as Byron said "a silly thing to do",couldnt agree with him more. You will know rebuilding an engine is going to cost ALOT of money, dont waste it on a 253,you will regret it...just my opinion.

A 308 stroker (350) would be even better!

Hello all,
I have considered a similar idea for a different reason.
I have a Monaro that I am trying to date match a 253 block for, and the only one close I have found so far is 060, but I have decided to either find another block, or sleeve the first one.
Sleeving is an expensive option when you consider what another block would cost.
I will keep looking, one day I may find one suitable for my Oct 74 Monaro, I have time to do this so you never know!
I have not measured up a 253 but I know they take 308's to 080, but then they get hot at the best of times.
I know I could fit a 308 in the Monaro, but that would not be original, anyway my other cars are 308, and like mr Dooby I like the 253's too.
If Mr Dooby is trying to get extra horsepower from his 253 there are many other tried and tested ways to do this and keep a normal bore size.
Even Gas will give more power if it is done right and getting the compression to 10:1

Mike, there is only 1 original engine for ANY car,its a mute point.
even an engine made on the same day doesnt make it any more original
than one three years away.308s are just better horsepower value, but if thats what you want,go for it.These are just our thoughts and replies, the final descision is up to the individual.

Thanks Jim,
I know this of course, I just wanted to have one close to the original rather than one that was miles away, IF I wasn't being so fussy I would use the better block anyway ( a late red QR or a ZR strengthened block )

Mike
