Just wondering what sort of gases people are using in there welders for body work. I got recomened to use pure argon as it aparently makes it burn cooler. But after trying to weld in a repair panel found im not getting much penatration into the shell metal but am blowing holes in the repair panel, Any ideas?

I assume its mig welding that youre doing ,a cooler gas may be youre problem .Normal mild steel mig gas should be fine talk to youre gas supplier as the gas will go by different brand names.let them know what thickness an type of material eg. 0.9mm mild steel. If you can get to the back of the repair hold a piece of 4mm-6mm alloy or copper behind it this will stop it from blowing thru,it wont stick to the weld.make sure you have a good earth on body . hope this helps --keeo

Pure argon is for TIG welding and Aluminium MIG welding.

Steel MIG welding is Supa 52 (Supagas) or Argoshield 52 (BOC) product. It has CO2 as well as argon. Speak to your gas supplier.

There is also many other characteristics you need to consider when welding. Material thickness, cleanliness, wire thickness, machine condition, machine suitability, operator experience, machine settings, earth etc.

I've just been using co2 works ok. maybe the metal being burnt through is a lot thinner.
