Been looking at Toyota coaster buses to turn into a motorhome.

Unbelievable mileage on some of the grey imports, lol... 1996 model 64000k, 1996 with 59500k and the icing on the cake 1990 with 60000k.

Does anyone know if the ECU (if they have one) records the actual mileage, and if so is it possible to scan it?

Unlikely this vehicle has an ECU. Just a mechanical diesel injector pump. Most later engine ECUs don`t record KMs, this data is available with scan tool via interrogating the instrument ECU. It may communicate information to or from the engine ECU for service intervals etc. Percy

all you can do is look at the condition of the vehicle as a whole, check the oil has it been changed?
look under the oil cap? basically does the rest of look like it,s done that sort of mile?

High milage cars can have well worn steering wheel grip also.

I've imported a couple of jap vehicles in for re-sale which have all been low km imports, 90% of them are genuine low km vehicles, you have to remember they can't really drive much there and in your instance, most company's over there have a minibus to move employees around to "company" events and team building exercises. Easiest way is to check for worn drivers seat, worn arm rest/door pad, worn steering wheel and general overall condition of the vehicle. A lot of vehicles have their form of a log book, if you have someone there who can read one for you is beneficial.

I probably shouldn't have Googled "grey import speedo scam" in the first place. Yep, condition will be the decider and mechanically speaking high k's don't seem to be a prob with those buses anyway.

Would really love to import a yank "Class A motorhome", starting to see a few appear here, so cheap over there but so many hurdles to jump through to import and register here.

Anyway, that's my "Tax return" project... errr except I'm too old to pay tax now, lol.

alot of high milage cars with speedo cluster changes have warn seatbelts and seatbelts that don't retract too well and wear on the drivers seat.
