I brought a WB deville today for $600!! got it off a university type who sold it to me because it had a yellow sticker and he didn't know how to change to bald tyre!! true story!
any way, it is a good unit and has been well maintained, has delivery info and service record etc and delivery was in 1984 from the paper work and owners manual The ADR tag is missing, so i am unsure of the build date. However the body number on the body tag is 500500A so i guess that is fairly late, like 1984. the Eng is L31 and trans is M38 on the same tag.!
Unusual? i thought the holdens / stateman ran M40 after july 1982
just need to confirm rougly what build date was 500500A for a WB deville.
incidently, i checked my WB caprice which is Nov 1984 and the build date is on the BODY tag as well. I had never taken notice of this before. when did this start? late 1984?

Just out of curiosity, what was the last build date for WB ute and WB statesman? Why were the 253 motors stamped with L36 instead of L32? Probably a silly question?

Body numbers out of Elizabeth were in the L550xxx range in June 1982, so I don't think it's as late as you think.
L36 was the code used on blue 4.2L in the commodore as well - so possibly spread across other models using the same engine.

Also - the body tag changed at the start of '82 to include a month/year on it, where it previous had "top" under the paint line.
If yours has "top" on it, then it pre-dates January 1982.

Hi Adam,
Good buy!
It sounds like a series I DeVille to me (series II came out mid '83), maybe the owners manual and delivery docs are from a newer car.
Mick I think has answered the question, but someone on here may be able to help with the dates the different chassis numbers started (ie AWB, BWB, CWB, DWB, EWB), so you can get an idea of month/year to confirm it.
WBute - L36 identified the 253 as having a 4 barrell manifold, blue 253s only. November '84 is the last build date I've ever seen for WB.

I do not have a lot of WB details so I can only narrow its date down a little bit with what I have. Which are 480359A was a 4th 1980 build and 570979-A which was a 8th 1982 build. So yours is from between that time frame. Cheers Paul.

I can narrow it down a little further.
Based on these Elizabeth body numbers around it, I recokon it's an Oct/Nov 1980 build, which would explain why it doesn't have the month/year on the body plate (but would have "top" there instead).
Body # L482259 Jun-80 Body # L497204 Oct-80 Body # L497335 Oct-80 Body # L509112 Jan-81 Body # L517473 May-81

its not unusual for a wb statesman to have a turbo 350...i would like 10 bucks for every one i have wrecked over the years...i actually have one in the yard at the moment. going to church makes you no more a christian than standing in a garage makes you a car... www.classicozwreck.com.au |
