^^

who here knew they were able to do this?
i received an email from eBay saying they had forwarded info for the last three years to the ATO because i had sales of more than $20000 in any one of those three years.

checked the ATO website and they also have access to Trading Post sales information as well!

FFS where do they get off!

New or used doesnt matter, if it looks like you are carrying on a business you will have to declare your income AND expenditure. You may not make a profit when the costs are taken into account.

This is the key phrase:

oh no, so the rock'n'roll recipients who make 20+ cash a year selling junk, and "hobbyists" who do nothing but wreck cars and sell on ebay for cash will get stung and pay tax like the rest of society with honest jobs?

Next theyll consider seriously chasing scrap metal scavengers who spend their (unemployed) lives following the council hard rubbish collections.

whats the world coming too?

as a hobby you are allowed up to $50,000 sales in second hand items but if you are selling new items you are running a business and must declare the sales, things may have changed since i last checked.ask mr ac delco i reckon he got done a few years back

You must be getting me mixed up with Paul Hogan ! I love rumours though ! The Tax department did send me that same email quite a few years back though, as i was not a registered business as such at the time , and had a normal day job . I know a few who also got this current email , so i think they are targetting the "backyarders" who dont declare their sales . Not sure how they decipher them though ?

If you are cleaning out your shed and it is seen as a one off then no worries, if you are trading in second hand or new goods then it is a business.

$50,000 in second hand sales could amount to $10,000 to $30,000 a year income.

Adam- i would reconsider selling on gumtree, as they are owned by ebay and therefore it stands to reason that they will pass on your sales details also.

what did surprise me is they had trading post details also, which is where i think i got flagged. i don't keep my cars for too long, i think i've sold 5 in the last year, and only one of those was strictly for profit. if i (or the mrs) don't like a car, it's history! i think it's crap they look at trading post sales in this light. for example- i bought a VW transporter... hated it. took a while but eventually it sold. paid 12k, sold for 9k six months later. bought a landcruiser instead for 5k, then found a much tidier one for 9.5k. sold the 5k one for 8k, recovered my loss. as for greenhj's comments i pay my fair share of tax, thankyou very much. i am definitely not a business, or even a hobbiest for that matter.

i will definitely rethink how and where i choose to advertise in the future though.

bring on the return of the swap meet!

people at swapmeets wanting ebay prices will take their stuff home with them every time, soon they will have to drop prices to move stuff.
In Adelaide at the swaps you see the regular sellers and know who to avoid, these are the clowns that want $300. for a HQ radio with no auction to get it that high! or the $1000. GTS steering wheel incomplete. pure knobs.
