Should i do anything with the 304 while out??

Tried to make a brief title that made sense... I have the 304 sitting there waiting to go back in when i get the chance. maybe next week.
But i was wondering while its sitting out should i take it to get some TLC? It runs fine and tuned up well according to my mechanic. But its got 325,000 ks on the clock. So I was wondering whet you guys think. Am i better off spending extra money and dragging the project out by getting the 304 pulled down and sorted out now while its out or should i just pop it back in and go for it. Nothing wrong with it as is but Im just wondering what I should get done to it now to make sure theres another couple hundred ks in it?

Maybe pull the heads and check for carbon / scoring in the bore. if all good, quick valve grind and away.

i had a 304 with 250 000kms. i bought it to rebuild. i heard it running. went for a quick drive in the car also. all was fine. it ended up having 8 thou taper in the bore,alot of movement in the valve guides. some of the big end shells were just showing copper. how far do want to go. you may not like what you find once the heads come off.

you dont need to pull the heads to figure out its rooted..just check that endfloat.. going to church makes you no more a christian than standing in a garage makes you a car... www.classicozwreck.com.au |

Thanks for the info guys. Jvanner you might be right. Once i start investigating it might lead to more and more stuff.
I was just wondering if i should take it to my mechanic to do maintenance on it while its out. im a completes nuff nuff when it comes to engines. thanks for advice greg but to be honest I dont even know what an end float is.. ha..

"The correct and most accurate way to do this is with a dial indicator. Remove the flywheel cover, attach the dial indicator to the engine, place the plunger of the indicator against the flywheel, gently push the crank toward the transmisson with a prybar, zero the indicator, push the crank back the other way, take your reading." Are cars with a manual tranny more likely to develop crank end float?

I always fit new big end shells especially with high k motors. If you get worn rings or mains you generally get warning and can fix at your leisure, but if a big end lets go it can destroy the engine. Fitting mains is also a good idea with high mileage engines. Yhave the motor out, it is easy to fix.

one other thing hainzy,if you dont do crank bearings then remove the sump and check to see what size oil pick up is in there..if its the small one launch it and put the large one in... going to church makes you no more a christian than standing in a garage makes you a car... www.classicozwreck.com.au |

Thanks guys. Appreciate the info. i might speak to my mechanic here and see if he has the time to do it or if he knows someone who might want to have a play. Thinkin I might as well do it while the engines out. Cheers very much for the feedback.
