Hi,
I have a South African Monaro GTS, 1st registered in South Africa 01/01/1971, I want to bring to WA (I have relocated here from there).
Does anyone know the meaning of the numbers on the plates?
VIN 80887A15 503751 ZCV
Paint code 28A
Trim code BLK.IMP10X
Eng No. OT394875
I'm trying to find out if I have matching numbers, what the original colour was (it's currently red), the original seat trim (it's currently black with red piping) and if the motor is a 307, 308 or 351.
Any help appreciated.

I'VE JUST FOUND OUT I'VE LOST MY CAR! I HAVE LOST WHAT I HAVE INVESTED. SOMEONE HAS STOLEN IT FROM ME SINCE I PUT INFORMATION OUT ABOUT IT THIS WEEK. SO MUCH FOR THE GOODNESS OF OUR FELLOW MAN! NOT WHAT YOU WOULD CALL "A FAIR GO"...

Really bad news Gavin. I presume is was still somewhere in South Africa when it was stolen. What's your chances of it being found again?

First I must apologise. My posting has been misleading.
It turns out that the situation is not as bad as I thought last night when I updated it in a spin.
I was in the process of buying the car and thought my mate in Cape Town had already paid for it for me this week using money I had already transferred to him on Monday. Then my mate sent me a message last night to say "Sorry, I've lost the car! Someone has taken it!". I immediately assumed it had been stolen from him...
It turns out that, despite numerous calls by my mate to the sellers mobile, to set up a meeting to make payment this week, he had not been able to get hold of the bloke until yesterday arvo. The bloke then told him that he had accepted a deposit on it from a bloke here in Australia yesterday morning so I had lost the deal (if he'd said "deal" not "car" I wouldn't have panicked!).
The good news is, my money is safe and I'll get it back. I'm sorry for the misunderstanding.
Does anyone know of someone else selling a '71 Monaro Coupe, in good condition, for $18k, or am I dreaming? Oh yes, the car had a 308...

Hey mate,

Sorry you missed out on the Monaro... bit of info for you, not that it's of much assistance now...

The tag should actually read 80837A1S, which is the correct code for a HT 308 Monaro.

The ZCV bit means it was a factory auto (Trimatic, I think)

With the engine, outside of the original rego documents, I am not aware of any way to confirm the engine is original with the RSA 308 models... However, I think they all had a 308H prefix motor from the factory. I used to have a '72 Chev SS (RSA HG Monaro) that had an NT prefix motor. I'm not sure if it was original, or a factory replacement or just a later engine change... car was very original otherwise, but engine didn't look original to me...

Paint code 28A... again no records of this, but based on what we have been able to put together over the years, I think it's a shade of red. A mate has/had an RSA Monaro with this code, he's sure it was red from the factory.

Interior BLK 10X - would have been black vinyl, no houndstooth...

Anyway, keep looking, a few cars are still out there. But you may also be able to buy one in Oz for a pretty decent price

Drop me a line if you want more info, I may know of a few cars for sale and I know a good seller in RSA who may be able to help...

I'm on [email protected]

Cheers

Paul D.

From what I understand, all those CKD SA cars that had 308 engines got 308H prefixed engines built and stockpiled prior to HQ engine release. If one has an NT block it has been fitted with a replacement HQ-HZ or LH-LX engine at some stage, with the sump removed and replaced with the HT-HG sump. A proper post 5/71 (approx) Nasco replacement engine for a HT-HG or Chev SS has a 308N prefix.
