Did HQs have a hood ornament option ? The one I have is on an HQ , it is oval with a what looks like an H simalar to an H off an HT bonnet , it is chromed and fits very well on the front of the HQ bonnet ? Mark.

yes HQ had a bonnet ornament option, it was a thin strip that ran up the center of the bonnet, it is about 1 mtr long

it's very similar to the EH bonnet ornament

iv'e never heard of a different option on the HQ's, most likely been put there by a previous owner

HQ`s never had standup mascots ,aftermarket ones may have been avail to many models and one found its way onto to your car.

Firstly yours may have had a NZ addition as the plant in Trentham often added accessories, and some were made in NZ at the time ( when they had a parts industry) The only way to tell is if the part has an actual number moulded or stamped into it as nearly all GM products have.If it doesn't have a number then chances are it is an aftermarket add on,a photo would help

HQ Export Caprice has a stand up hood mascot.
Only car in HQ model that got it.
It would seem that only late 74 model that was marketed in South Africa as the Chevrolet Caprice, and then into HJ had them.

try nz or south africa for confirmation!
i had a customer from palmerston nth in NZ with HT brougham who was after one of those
he believed it was original on hisHT but exhausted all resources in finding another one
he did draw a pic of what looked like what your describing
maybe it was made in south africa for HT/G & HQ

The HQs don't look good with this accessory. The hood ornament is fine on the older Holdens but the HQ was just a little too modern for this old-fashioned touch. A flick through the HQ accessories brochure really shows the changes in the HQ model where the old Holden was finally replaced by an up-to-date car.

I disagree, I like the bonnet strip on a HQ, its modest in size & can brake up that large bonnet area nicely, on a commodore would be wrong, but things go around in a cycle, I recently saw a VE sports wagon finished in red with a white roof, when was the last time you saw that on a Holden wagon that wasn't a fleet car? HZ?.
I spoke to the owner & he had purchased it as hail damaged & fixed the roof panel himself, when preping the roof he painted a white base primer & liked the look & went with a white top coat & it has realy made the wagon stand out, with classic looks but still modern.
but everyone likes what they like, otherwise it would be a boring world wouldn't it?....

The bonnet strip was avail up to the HZ and look good on restored cars.
