Thanks: 5 times
hi fellas

Does anyone know whether the 5.8 in the FC LTD (79-82) is a Cleveland or Windsor and how to (easily) tell the difference between the two? Is one better than the other, not planning on any mods.

cheers franklin

xr 289 windsor
xt 302 windsor
xw 302/351 windsor (some rare late 351 clevo's)
xy 302 windsor 351 cleveland
xa 302/351 clevo
xb 302/351 clevo
xc 302/351 clevo
xd 302/351 clevo
xe 302/351 clevo

eb 5.0L windsor
ed 5.0L windsor
ef 5.0L windsor
el 5.0L windsor
au 5.0/5.6L windsor

note that xy used a 302 wheazer but by xa they were 302 clevos, ford aus actually developed the destroked 302 and they were only ever sold here, thats why alot of USA clevo parts say 351c, these parts will fit 302's its just they barely know that a 302c exists

the other thing to note if your looking at buying this car is that the blocks are identical between a 302c and 351c, on a windsor they are actually a different block between the 2 different sizes so nobody can easily trick you

but clevos being the same block there is no external way of telling if its a 302 or 351, the best way to check if your looking at buying the car is to check teh stroke, 302 had a 3" stroke and 351 had a 3.5" stroke

being a fd ltd it SHOULD be a 351 but they were optionable with a 302, fairlanes were 302 standard

show me a picture of the motor and ill tell you if its a clevo or windsor

the best basic way to tell the difference is if its got a wet/dry inlet manifold, windsors have coolant threw the inlet manifold and the thermostat housing is bolted to the front of the manifold.
clevo has the thermostat housing coming out of the block infront of the inlet manifold

windsor thermostat housing should sit horizontal facing the radiator, early clevo was verticle facing teh bonnet and late clevo was in the same spot but the housing came up a few inches and did a right angle to face the radiator

yours should be a right angle housing

there are a tonne of differences but thats the easiest way to tell if your unexperianced with either one
