Hi all, I am a newbie on this site and need some help / advice. Can anyone give me advise on converting a 302 cleveland into a 351(for a xb sedan).I know that i have to find a 351 crank and can keep the 302 rods. I dont know what kind of pistons i require, and whether i can keep the 302 2v closed chamber heads on it. If so what work will need done to the heads to keep the compression down. Im not looking for serious horsepower, just something with half decent power. I want to keep the 302 block because it is a matching number engine.
Any advise will be much appreciated... If anyone has a 351 crank for Sale i would be interested in buying...
Any engine Combinations i could look into? I have a budget of about 6k. Cheers

Keep it as a 302, just balance the pistons and rods, mild grind cam, extractors and a 500 Holley, that will give you plenty for a street machine and save a hoot on fuel.

Just get some 351 rods the 302 heads will be fine we have 98 fuel now days. Talk to a cam doctor about what you want. maybe something like a XY-A GT type of cam size would be good. 351 is the way to go.

you can run special short pistons to use the 302 rods which is a good combination.
from memory the set in my motor are ACL
i HAVE to run 98 and even then iv had the chambers opened up a bit, these days its on gas and it loves the comp

Thanks Big Cav..! Much Appreciated info. If i was to go down this road do i need open chamber heads or will the closed chambers be okay? or am i better off buying a 351 block and rebuilding that? What is your take on this. Would it cost more to convert the 302 or rebuild a 351? Cheers!

i dont think price will vary that much
my motor in my zk was a original 302 (zk only had 302) and too keep it matching numbers the block was left as is with the 302 closed chamber heads but fitted with a 351 crank.
iv never calculated the compression but initially it was too high for it to run nice, the heads came back off and the chambers were opened up a bit, you will see there is plenty of meat in the chamber you can hack away at
to keep yours matching numbers and a simple build id keep the 302 block, fit 351 crank but fit up 351 open chamber heads.
id imagine this way would be cheaper then buying and also rebuilding a 351, 351 open chamber heads in rebuildable condition can be found for 150 bucks etc

302 rods are not what you want with the street motors performance you are looking for and them pistons may cost you??? the std 351 pistons with 302 heads can be ok. Talk to a engine builder about what you really want. and spend the money wisely in the right places with it.

Thanks to all that have replied to my post... Ive spoken with my mechanic and for around 6k i will be rebuilding my 302 with 351 crank and rods and fully rebuilding the complete motor with mild head work (302 heads). I believe it would be some sort of BOSS Motor in the end..with hopefully around 350hp. If i can achieve this, it will be more than enough power for the money spent..
